probably a stupid question re: bathing suits?
What kind of rash exactly are the rash guard bathing suits guarding against? I thought they were just to give more protection from the sun.
And am I the only one that doesn't use them?

Re: probably a stupid question re: bathing suits?
My kids get rashes from life vests, etc...so they put the shirt on to protect that.
I'm not sure if that's why they are called rash guards, but that's how they guard my kids from rashes

I think they've been called rash guards for years by surfers, they are the originators of the shirt/bottom bathing suit combo...not sure if they were prone to rashes or if it's just a clever name

ITA. I am pretty sure they are called that bc they keep surfers from getting rashes when sliding on/off the surfboard.

This is it exactly. I always wore one when I was surfing cause the sand and wax on the board was not comfy at all.

I have heard them called 'Rash shirt". I thought it was UV protecting short.

I never understood that either...now I do!
But I don't use one. I just lather her up in sunscreen. To me they just seem uncomfy in the heat. I can't imgaine wearing a nylon shirt when it was 90 degrees out.

once they are wet - they are actually cooler because of more of skin is kept wet.
i used them for years surfing and especially windsurfing - where i would get a rash from the surface of the board if i did not wear one
also ilike for my kids to wear them because as a percentage of their body weight - they have a larger percentage and i try to limit the chemicals i apply to their skin
