Facebook and "People You May Know"?
Ok...so can people still find out if you been browsing their FB page by the "People You May Know"??

i don't think so....at least I hope not!
I think that feature shows people that are friends with your friends that you may or may not know. It's kind of like the mutual friends feature. It may also use your school, work, interests, etc if you provided them in your profile.

I just noticed someone I know who uses a false name for security reasons (law enforcement) in my "People You May Know" box. I was pretty close with this person 10+ years ago, but I don't believe they're friends with any of my "friends" on FB. I was only able to piece it together based on their location and their 1 and only public "Friend." Otherwise they had no other info in their profile.

Really? That is so embarassing! Do you know how many times I have ended up on some random person's page after clicking onto my friend's tagged pictures? Although I have noticed my ex pop up on mine quite a few times. I just thought FB was finding a way to annoy me.

I don't think so, I get so many people I have no clue who they are. They are usually a friend if dh's friends or someone who was older or younger than me in hs. I'm assuming bc my hs friends have some kind of connection to them.
Do you have that person's email in your records? Fb definitely looks up people you might know from your email contacts. I started getting professors popping up. And former classmates I have not kept in touch with.
They have so many algorithms.

i don't know how it works exactly, but I had a girl pop up on my "people you may know list" who was a recruiter i met with maybe twice, when I first got out of college and was searching for jobs.. honestly I have no clue how she popped up because this was 6 years ago!
Most of the other people that pop up are people I went to HS with.

That's what I thought. It more from mutual friends, work, school, etc. Not about you clicking on their profile.

I once did a FB search where it used my email contacts to search FB and then told me who was on FB by their email addy. I am convinced it's done that way. I know my DH's brother is on FB under a false name because when I search by his email addy, he comes up.
I don't think it has anything to do with looking at a person's page. I do think it's done by email address.

They show up because of your email address. There is a woman my boss used to do business with of which I would be copied on his email correspondence to her, so I'm sure that's why FB suggests them.

 and I agree that it is sometimes people who looked at you but I think it is also people with whom you have a lot of mutual friends.

Based upon my experience, if you have ever used "friend finder," anyone you have ever emailed that has a FB account associated with that email, will pop in in your "people you may know" column. I"ve had several au pair candidates, as well as other various people, pop up that I know I've never searched for and I doubt were ever looking for me (i.e. title search personnel, etc.)

IDK about that b/c I one of the ppl in my "people you may know", is a girl I went to HS w/ 9 yr old daughter. I doubt this little girl was looking at my profile unless her Mom logged in under her ID to do that.

yeah oi don't think so i think it's
1) Friends of Friends
2) people who listed the same school/place of employment, etc
3) People who are in your email contacts either by virtue of you sending them a message or them having been on a group email sent to you and others

That's what I'm wondering.  This person's email isn't in my contacts on my laptop, wireless devices or desktop...BUT their address is sometimes in forwards I receive. Maybe FB is pulling it from Outlook?

My 10 year old nephew just popped up in "people you may know". I didn't even know he had an email account, which means he's probably using his moms.

You'd have to give FB permission to access your contacts. If you were clicking fast, you could easily do it. I never did & I don't have my email address in my contacts.
I think you're right. I was clicking around yesterday looking for old friends, I clicked on the profile of the brother of a friend from HS (who isn't on FB). Today he's in my People You May Know. I don't have his email address & he wouldn't have been on a forward as he's not in my year.

Same here.
I really don't think so. There are some people who probably wouldn't be able to pick me (or even my NAME, especially since I only have my married name on FB) our of a line up who are on the "People You May Know" list. I think it's just based on how many mutual friends you have.
ETA: And I also have NO contact list associated with my e-mail address for FB. So it's not pulling contacts from your e-mail account.

I dont believe that bc I always get my best friends boyfriends father as people I may know and I know for a fact he never even logs onto FB and hasn't for months.
