avoiding cabin fever with a winter-baby?
LO is due in October - what do i do with him all day so that i'm not stuck indoors?
can i go take walks outside (i'd obviously dress him warmly and put one of those rain/weather guards on the stroller)? What else is there to do other than go to the mall?
I don't want to get cabin fever and lose my mind!
TIA

Re: avoiding cabin fever with a winter-baby?
DD and I were out on any day over 50 degrees. Naturally, it snowed all winter and rained for the early part of the spring after she was born. I avoided driving with the baby in snow, but we did a lot of strolls around Target and the mall on rainy days. Even a trip to DD for a cup of coffee can help.
eta: just re-read your post and noticed that you mentioned the mall. In the early days, I did the same as Sandra - tried to nap or eat between feedings. Cabin fever didn't really hit me for awhile b/c I was too tired lol.

Re: avoiding cabin fever with a winter-baby?
I had my DS Dec 28th. I would go anywhere just to get out. In the mornign I would get him dressed and we would go get coffee.
Later in the day we would walk in the malls.
On Fridays I would take him to WW meetings.
If it is nice out take him for walks! I was lucky and had a mild winter. If its 50 or over I would Def take a walk outside.
I say get comfy taking them places early. IMO as a first time mom it was more about my fears than the baby actually being uncomfortable.

Re: avoiding cabin fever with a winter-baby?
We just went for walks outside. We didn't do much else. I was told to avoid the mall for 12 weeks because it was flu season where I am, but DD was born in January, not October. So by the time it's really cold up there, you should be ok with going to the mall / stores / etc. Small playgroups, mommy groups, etc, can get you out of the house. Our local library has baby storytime too -- you can go even when the baby is very little and just leave him in the car seat (so, more for you than the baby).
I honestly just stayed home and tried to sleep between feedings the first few months, fairly unsuccessfully. But by 3-4 months old, we started to get out more!

ditto!! Talk to your dr. about going to Malls.. I wouldn't take a newborn to a mall. Recycle aire and all..
But I took him for walks.. bundled up.. ask your ped what temp you can walk them in.
And total agree with above poster.. I didn't do much but want to sleep when they slept the first few weeks!!

Re: avoiding cabin fever with a winter-baby?
What about the movies? During the day in the winter I'm sure it's empty so even if your LO starts crying it won't really matter.
Or even book stores, I could entertain myself for hours in a book store.
Other than that I can only say maybe a new hobby; scrap-booking all of your LO's milestones (meaning numerous trips to the Michael's or AC Moore!), buy Rosetta Stone and learn a language or if I was coordinated at all I would learn to knit...
Personally I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a mild winter like we had this past year!

Re: avoiding cabin fever with a winter-baby?
I actually don't mind cabin fever in the winter but I will probably take my baby out to the stores. I work at the outlets so I will probably pop in to visit my friends who work with me so I can actually talk to some grownups. If it's anything like it was last winter we might he able to do some outdoors stuff, go to the work, the aquarium is walking distance for me etc
