LOVED that article - thanks.

Like a PP - I'm really hoping for an un-medicated birth and I'm not so much worried about the pain, but that fact that I may have to "fight" for it.

Have you maybe thought about a Doula? They can be pretty $$$ but I know a lot of times training doulas can be a lot less if not free. The whole reason the show up to your birth is to support your wishes, and help you get the birth you want. There are a lot on Long Island :)

check out doula.com for lots more info

I have.

I don't think it's for me. I'd rather have the birth experience be about me, my DH and our child. I don't want another person in the mix....

Luckily, my DH is very supportive and I think he'll be a good advocate. Plus, I'll be my own advocate as well.

You might be a little busy to truly advocate for yourself. During contractions I'd kind of fade out. Do you have a mom/MIL/sister/friend that you'd consider having there? Sometimes just having another woman in the room helps. Are you using a midwife or a supportive OB? Definitely take a Bradley class; the one I went to was amazing.

Sorry for crashing but I was really happy to see this article posted here and wanted to provide my unsolicited 2 cents Chat Icon

We birthed our DS on Christmas morning at NSUH without so much as a tylenol. While our Ob was supportive of natural birth, I cannot tell you how difficult it was dealing with some of the nursing staff and resident doctors..thank GOD for shift changes. The Bradley coursework we took and OUR DOULA made it possible. Our doula- Helen Dressner, pushed staff when she needed to and help advocate our wishes, she never spoke for us but she and my husband worked together and this enabled me to focus SOLELY on each contraction. Helen was also an angel in coaching me through the most trying times.

I know you want to keep the experience as private as possible, I am with you on that but a doula is your employee...the ONE person on your birth team (other than DH) completely accountable to you. It will help! Whatever the fee is, I'm sure it will be less than whatever an anestheologist charge would be! DS and I were so well after delivery that we were discharged a day early, only spent 1 night in the hospital!

Good luckl!
