If you support gay marriage, do you support polygamy?
If you support gay marriage, do you also support polygamy? What is the difference? If the law should not define who can marry, should it define how many we can marry?
ETC: By support I meant support the "legalization of"

Re: If you are pro-gay marriage, are you pro-polygamy?
I'm pro "consenting adults" marriage. As long as all parties involved are consenting adults, I have no problem with it. The age of consent can vary by state, the gender doesn't matter, and the number of individuals doesn't matter to me.... as long as all parties, both existing and incoming, know all of the details, and consent to the arrangement. One guy having two families on opposite sides of the country who don't know about each other is not good. If everyone consents, it doesn't affect my marriage, or my life, so I really don't care. DW also agrees with this. We've talked about it after watching Sister Wives. It's not for us, but we definitely think it's OK.

While personally I don't think polygamy is "morally right", I don't feel that it should be illegal if that's what you mean. But I far from support it. I'm pretty easygoing- as long as you aren't hurting anybody, I say live and let live.

To me morally, polygamy is wrong. However I think consenting adults should have a right to marry.

There is a huge difference between gay marriage and polygamy.
I view marriage as a commitment between 2 individuals. Male or Female, makes no difference.

I am all for both. As far as polygamy goes as long as all parties are consenting adults I don't see what the big deal is. What they do doesnt effect me, unless they ate marrying child brides, who am I to tell them how to live their lives?

Re: If you support gay marriage, do you support polygamy?
Yes for consenting adults.
However for the 16 year olds (which is the age of consent in the majority of states), I think there needs to be some safeguards in place for those looking to leave a marriage. They should be required to complete at least a HS level education.

Re: If you support gay marriage, do you support polygamy?
I never thought to compare the two honestly. I do support gay marriage.
Morally I do not really like polygamy, or maybe I just do not understand it. Who am I to say what is right for others though ya know?
I agree that consenting adults should have the freedom to live how they choose.

Re: If you support gay marriage, do you support polygamy?
I support gay marriage but not polygamy, and I do not think they can be equated in the same way. 2 people is 2 people whether its men, women or whatever.
Polygamy is marriage to multiple partners, and that is a lifestyle I don't agree with so much as I don't necessarily like it. I'm kinda of ambivalent about polygamist marriages. They don't really affect me.
I don't have the capacity to love multiple people the way I love my husband, nor would I want to. To me, polygamy is an excuse to legalize adultery. You are not born a polygamist, tha IS a choice. Homosexuality is NOT a choice.

I'm asking from a legal standpoint re: the definition of marriage, what is the difference? If the law shouldn't limit who we can marry why should the law limit how many we can marry?

From a legal stand point, I can totally see it as next up. The laws have changed in some states - changing the definition of marriage being between a man and a woman. Why wouldn't the laws be changed again?

Re: If you support gay marriage, do you support polygamy?
Another poster already said something along these lines but I read all responses and I don't feel like going back again to find it to quote..
I support gay marriage 100%, because prohibiting gay marriage is discrimination.
I don't necessarily 'support' polygamy but I don't think there's really a valid basis for it to be illegal so long as all the parties involved are consenting adults. The majority doesn't like it, maybe they think it's immoral, maybe it is immoral... but I think people and the government in general need to learn how to mind their own business.
In fact, I think most legislation regarding marriage equates to the government overstepping it's limits. As long as all parties involved are consenting adults, the government and your neighbors really need to keep their opinions to themselves.

Re: If you support gay marriage, do you support polygamy?
I really feel like it's not my right to make choices for other people. As long as no one is being hurt, abused, coerced, etc... It's their life.
I don't consider myself for or against anything but equal rights.

ITA. Also, if polygamy was legalized the issues that we tend to associate with it (child brides, forced marriages, closed off communities, corrupt private police, etc.) might decrease because they dont have to live in secrecy anymore. The leaders of these sects thrive on the fact that they have a captive audience, afraid of the governement so if they dont have to be afraid anymore some of that power is taken away.

If they aren't hurting anyone, abusing children or animals and if everyone is free to come and go in the relationship as they see fit then who cares. I don't like the polygamist communities who force marriage, no one should be forced to do anything they don't want to do

What amuses me about the whole argument is the Church encouraged monogamy so that during succession/inheritance laws, it was possible for the Church to gain control of more wealth since the younger brother was usually sent to seminary.
