For anyone who switched OBs during your pregnancy

I'm considering switching and I'm wondering if the new doctor will make me redo all those blood tests I had in the beginning of my pregnancy. Or will it be enough to have the results sent over from the old doctor? Also I'm due for my 20 week sono very soon. If I end up having it done with my current doctor before the new doctor can see me, will the new doctor want to do his own sonogram?

Re: For anyone who switched OBs during your pregnancy

I switched earlier, at 10 weeks. They just asked for my records from my old OB and they checked to make sure that my old OB didn't miss anything. Once I knew I was doing it, I asked for my a copy of my records. Getting that can take a week, so ask early at your current OB. My new OB just went with my old sono.

I made the appt with my new OB and it took me weeks to get in. So call the new one, see when you can get in and I'd keep your 20 week at your current OB. Many new doctors won't do a sono at your first appt with them anyway.

You left Suffolk ob/gyn? Did you feel like there were just too many doctors in the practice? If I stay with them I would be nervous about the day of my delivery because I'll have no idea who my doctor would be until the day I go into labor. And there's no way to really get to know each doctor before hand very well because there's so many! Are you happier now that you switched?

I switched at 12 weeks, I called them at 10 weeks..
The new people asked me for my records as usual but that was it. I had an US at 6 weeks I think but by 12 weeks it was the new one anyway.

In all honesty, you might not know the doctor that delivers your baby in any practice you go to. I switched to a small practice now and my doctor has other doctors on call for delivery. You just never know.

When I delivered DS I totally didn't want one certain Suffolk OBGYN doctor to deliver him. (Even though there were a few of them I hadn't even met yet.) The one dr I didn't want seemed cold and very short with me when I had questions throughout pregnancy. When I was sent to the hospital to deliver from one of my appts, they told me the dr to deliver DS was the ONE doctor I DID NOT want to deliver DS. Well, I was there so long that new doctors took over anyway. Chat Icon Chat Icon

But, amazingly enough, the dr I didn't want was the one I saw often after my delivery while in the hospital. That dr became one of my favorites in those few days and was much nicer and caring.

WIth that being said: I am extremely happy I switched practices. This doctor already 'knows' me and puts me at ease. The first appt I had with him he did let me know that other doctors may deliver my baby, but that those doctors delivered his children. So far, I am much happier than I was.

Oh that's good to know! I never did ask him. I just hope he's available when I need him. I just had an appt and he told me I need to have 3 more pregnancies. I looked at him and said what?!?! He tells me that him and the entire office love having me as one of their pregnant patients and don't want to see me leave LOL. They are awesome Chat Icon

Re: For anyone who switched OBs during your pregnancy

I left my ob at 19 weeks. Call around cause not all drs will take a new patient into their pregnancy.....so I would switch now if you really want to.

My Dr took all my old records.

If you are having doubts about your Dr then switch. It was the best decision I ever made. I ended up having complications and I do not think I would have received the same level of care from my first Dr

I know that could happen, but I still think it would be nicer to have one doctor to refer to and see throughout my pregnancy instead of a different doctor each time. I'm already almost halfway through my pregnancy and everytime I go in for an appointment it feels like my first appointment because it's always a different doctor who has to look at my chart before he or she can even start talking to me. Then I'm always afraid they're going to miss something that the last doctor wrote or forget to do a certain test thinking the last doctor did it. I think I'll be much happier with just one doctor or at least a smaller practice. Thanks for all the input! Chat Icon I won't say any names, but I think I know which doctor you were talking about that you didn't want delivering your first child. I have had appointments with doctor there who made me and DH very uncomfortable and didn't seem to be listening to us at all.

Since then, I have met two other doctors there that I truly HATE. Now the first dr I didn't necessarily like in the first place didn't seem so bad. Chat Icon

I know what you're saying about being switched from dr to dr and going through the same questions through pregnancy. I truly believe my new dr is a ray of sunshine. I cried (with relief) after my first appt with my new dr. I immediately felt at ease there. I had fears that he calmed. DS was a large baby and my old office made me feel like a freak about it. They also delivered him early because they thought he was getting too big. But, he ended up in NICU anyway because of his lung development. My new dr said 'Some people just have big babies.' It was nice to know I wasn't a freak.

They are a great office! At my first appt I talked with one of them about her upcoming wedding and where to get indoor pictures done. I really feel at ease there and I've only had three appts. My level II is this week, so I hope for a good fourth appt.

OMG! My appt is Thursday too! I would die if we were there together! I figure she isn't going to be there, just before her wedding. I told her good luck last time I was there.

We do hope to find out the sex. Chat Icon

I say go for it.

I switched after my first appt. Best decision I made. Unfortunately, I had to redo a few of the blood tests because my previous OB 'lost' the results (!?!?!?). Also, they apparently didn't do ALL of the tests. In all honestly, I was SUPER grateful to have switched. Basic tests weren't done...and if I hadn't switched, I would have never known!

Go with your gut. You want to feel comfortable.
