I think the fact that we a re questioning the validity of this quiz shows just how bubbled we are.

outside of the East Coast and especially NY area, America IS evangelicals, fast food places, and pick up trucks.

that is the whole point of this quiz.

we are not, and we are not exposed to, for the most part, what "american" culture is because we are so much more influenced and exposed to the other cultures of the world.

that is the point.

No.

I just feel like THEY are living in a bubble.

here is the thing...never in my life have I ever felt i lived in a bubble until I was 28. I completely felt I was in a bubble, I called it my stay in lala land. sahms with no life issues, just having fun. going out at night together, hanging out at neighborhood private pools during the day. husbands with job security.
bubbles have very little problems, it is safe in a bubble.
i am now out of my bubble and feel the effects daily.

everyone now around me is trying to get the hell out of their surroundings and crave more...
.

THIS. 100%. Thats the point of the quiz, and its sort of a mini wake up call. I agree some of the questions are downright odd. I scored a 33 the first time I took it, but I re-took it and changed my answer to 1 question (whether your friends have political differences) and realized I have friends that range from hard core Republicans, Democrats, Independents, etc.

My score dropped to 27. Judging from some of the responses on this thread, its interesting to see the wide range of scores (from 2 to 61, etc). Def says something, huh? Chat Icon

Sorry but, EVERYONE has problems - even those in the "bubble" you describe in fact, some of them may have BIGGER problems than you. I think this is a very unfair statement - very. And, I'm sure your sahm buddies would probably agree with me if they read what you wrote.

There are plenty of rich people that DO GOOD. That are TRUE philanthropists. That REGARDLESS of their own net worth help others, see how the "other half" lives and do something positive to help.

I know, I've met people like this. They're the ones who aren't afraid to get their hands dirty to help someone, they are the same people who have the resources to use their private plane to pick up a sick child in a foreign country and bring him/her to this country to receive life saving heart surgery.

I know these people exist as much as Mitt Romney.

These people, for all their money, IMO, do NOT live in an insular world. They are FULLY aware they have more than others and they do something good with it. They're aware of the world around them.

Remember not everyone with money was born into it. Some of them actually WORKED for what they have.

Yes, but if you read the author's commentary, that is factored in the score, for example an I Banker who grew up poor will score significantly higher than someone who hasn't

I disagree, regarding the insulation. if you haven't done it, grown up with it, lived it for any period of time, you are still in a bubble. just b/c someone can visit underprivledged people and write checks doesn't mean that they aren't in a bubble. They may be good people, by anyones definition, but they are still insulated.

Also, the quiz is geared toward those that live in America and insulated from the american "norm", it does not address cultural awareness of other cultures nor to the plight of the dirt poor in other countires, which again is a whole nother scale of underprivledged, but I would bet its a lot harder to write a quiz that covers both.

I scored a 40. so I'm still insulated a great deal as well obviously.

LI is insulated. yes there are rich areas all over the country, and those that grew up in those zip codes and haven't left, well, they're insulated too.

I've spent a good deal of time working on projects in upstate NY, Ohio and areas of PA. except for the fact that everyone speaks english, you sometimes really get the feeling that you're in a different country.

Yes, everyone has problems but its a different kind of problem. There are all kinds of SAHMs, but generally I see the gist of it - theres a big divide between being a single mom juggling a F/T job and 2 P/T jobs just to feed her family vs a SAHM of some investment banker who brings home $10K net/month..The latter clearly has a "different" type of problem than the former (where survival means just being able to pay rent/food/basic necessities).

Re: Do you live in a Bubble?

I live in MI and nobody I know has Gucci, Prada, elaborate family vacations. Until I found LIF I had no idea "normal" people and not celebs had this stuff. Some of you talk about world travel, going to broadway, shopping, and so on that just blow my ever loving mind! Looking at the Fashion Forum under the recent shopping I am floored! Talking about "quick" family get aways for just a weekend that cost more then my mortgage payment. The point is that the USA is large and just because you understand other cultures, have homosexual friends, eat nice food does not mean you are not in a bubble...what it means is you are in a more elaborate bubble at times just as my bubble is more rusty and 2nd hand store shoppingChat Icon

another point to nail it on the head..

i don't understand why people are getting so up in arms over this.. it's a quiz on the internet people! it doesn't change who you are or what your beliefs are
its doesn't say that if you are middle class you are any better or worse than someone who is upper middle class, nor does it say upper class people aren't nice!

i got a 19

11–80: A first-generation upper-middle-class person with middle-class parents. Typical: 33.

0–43: A second-generation (or more) upper-middle-class person who has made a point of getting out a lot. Typical: 9.

0–20: A second-generation (or more) upper-middle-class person with the television and movie going habits of the upper middle class. Typical: 2.

i think its funny because i feel compared to my family i am borderline poverty

i also received a 19 and didn't find this quiz too accurate at all! Chat Icon

Re: Do you live in a Bubble?

Wow talking about missing the point. This isn't a good versus bad thing. Not too long ago we were talking about the 99%. This quiz is a play on that. In the quiz they are talking about the majority of americans. If you took everyone and put them into what is normal for america (not for long island or new york for that matter) and come up with what all those people have in common youwill have people who wont fall inside of that norm. Those are people who are in the bubble.

Not a bad thing at all, in fact most of the normal america would love to be in that bubble. It seems only the people actually in the bubble are complaining. Hell I would have been first to say I'm in no bubble, but I am. Most of us on long island are no matter how rich or poor we think we have grown up.

I don't know, I don't mind being in a bubble.

(cue the Chat Icon)

I grew up with a blue-collar father who had a pick-up truck, no 401k, we went to garage sales, had no health insurance, they had to rent out a cottage on their property to help pay their taxes. Lived with nothing fancy but there was food on the table, clothes on our backs, and love in our house.

I went to college practically free on grants because we were considered low-income.

I went to college, graduated, worked hard, and now have a career, own a house, bought a brand-new car a few years ago, and don't have a ton of debt.

I worked hard to get into a bubble. I'm happy in there and keep working hard to stay in it.

I do volunteer and donate, but being in a bubble is not an insult to me.

Bubbles mean security, and I will try never to pop it. Even if it pops due to a lay off, etc, I was smart enough to start a back-up bubble, just in case.

I was thinking this myself. If I'm "in a bubble", then I'm GLAD I am. It means that both my DH and I have succeeded in bettering ourselves and providing a comfortable life for ourselves and our children, and giving them diverse and interesting experiences. If it means our taste in movies and restaurants are different than people outside of this so-called "bubble", then so it is-- cultural and regional differences exist, why does this surprise anyone?

And as the PP said, I bet most people who are "outside the bubble" would gladly trade places Chat Icon

Exactly. My buddies would agree with me. We loved our days together....a lot. It was fun and no problems....good kids, places to go.

Now, I am putting together playgroups and I do have to say, these moms...all working moms, do not live a charmed life. One is 22 working full time at a rsvp bell. Another is a marine married to a marine. They have no idea what my old life was like.

Re: Do you live in a Bubble?

I am surprised at the responses on here. The bubble they are referring to is not about how insulated you are to other cultures but rather how insulated you are from the poor or working class middle America. Even if you have worked or donated to people like these it does not mean you can relate to them or understand their day to day life.

The fact the we are talking broadway shows, and books etc. Demonstrates the point of the quiz. If you are lower class living in Nebraska you do not have those options. It does not mean that they are better or not in some other type of bubble but just that we as middle or upper class Americans are so far removed from them.

I scored a 28 but I am first generation. However, I came from un upper middle class upbringing and as an adult we are upper middle to upper. I see big differences between myself and people who are my fb friends who I went to public high school with ( not on li). Their idea of a date night out is Red Lobster or Benihana - whereas I, wouldn't be caught dead in those places and rather eat at ABC Kitchen or Minetta Tavern. It is a completely different mentality, and while I am worldly in general - I simply cannot relate to them or their struggles no matter how much I may try.

Perhaps it's just my own "chip on the shoulder" but as someone in the bubble I'm taking some of the responses here as those who aren't in the bubble are more accepting of others and those who are in the bubble are snobby and couldn't possibly know how the *real* people live.

I guess I take exception to the term "real people". I'm very real. I live a VERY real life and believe me, it's FAR from charmed. Very far.

I get a distinct impression that it's someone of a dig to be "in the bubble" and I just don't think that's right.

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad I live a relatively secure life and grew up that way, I wouldn't change it for the world, but I don't think that's a reason to crucify those who grew up that way either.

I'm not sure if I'm explaining myself very well...Chat Icon

I see what the point of the quiz is. My upbringing was first-generation (on one side), blue-collar, at or below poverty level at times.

We eventually broke out of that and things got better financially but my past is my past and that's what I'm built on.

I wish I could've checked 'yes' for the pickup truck question Chat Icon
