My dd has to get a helmet . Any advice is more than welcome !

We went today to our orthotic appointment and were told we should get it for her. We are also in the process of making her appointment to meet with a neurologist to rule anything else out. I am so stressed ! Please share your experiences if you have any !

My DS just got his off after wearing it for 3.5 months. The experience was not bad at all, except for some dumb questions from strangers Chat Icon DS had no problems wearing it and we're very happy with the results. Please feel free to FM if you have any questions.

how old was he? dd is 9 months old and had her head size issue since she was born . We moved to NC when she was 2 months and took a few months for us to get insurance so now this has been dragged out . I am worried that since she is older she will have more of a problem with it Chat Icon

same

My DD was 5 months
wore it for 3.5 months and the results were amazing. I took a week by week progression shot (birds-eye-view) and saw a difference in the first week!!!

Mommy took it the hardest at first. Chat Icon Chat Icon My DD didn't seem to care. Maybe a little extra cranky at first. but really didnt seem bothered by it at all after that! It took me a lil while to get over the stares and questions out in public..but I put cute hats on top of it to hide it a little!! haha!! But she was in the stroller most of the time and most people didnt see it!

After it was all said and done..the 3.5 months went really fast and 4 years later I barely remember it!

Please feel free to ask any questions!
good luck! I promise it wont be that long, their heads are so pliable at that age.
good luck

Re: My dd has to get a helmet . Any advice is more than welcome !

My DS was prescribed a helmet as well. And like the previous posts, it was harder on the grown ups than the child.

My son had a flat head from laying on in one position for so long and he had neck muscle trouble too. Out first step was to see a physical therapist and do stretching exercises but the damage was done and he still needed the helmet too.

We got the helmet when he was maybe 5/6 months old and he wore it about 4 months total. One thing I will tell you which isn't a favorable decision amongst doctors or parents of children with helmets, is that I only had my son wear his at night while he slept. When he first got it, he was already holding his head up by himself, so during the day we kept him sitting up right as much as possible either in a swing or seat. When he napped during the day we propped his head in the other direction with a folded birpy. At night he wore the helmet to sleep through the night.

Why did I make this decision against the advice of my doctors? I was uncomfortable with the looks we would get out in public. It was the summer and it was hot an sweaty. Yes, I decorated it with stickers and made it as attractive as possible but I just did not what my son stared at. We tried it for a few days and I did not like the responses.

Ultimately I think I made the right decision. After his monthly check ups all the doctors decided he was rounding out so well he would not need another larger helmet.

Good luck to your daughter and you. It's not the worst thing, and it will go by quickly.

My DS got it just before he turned 6 months. I wouldn't worry too much that she's getting it a little later. Better late than never! Good luck to you!

I was just told that my DS will need a helmet. he is 4 months old. i know so many people who had to wear the helmet, so i am ok, at least i think i am ok. I had a breakdown last night and i am sure i will cry when he first gets the helmet. like PP said, i think it is harder on the parent than on the child

My son got his helmet at almost 7 months and wore it until the day before his first birthday. I am very happy with the results. It didn't seem to bother him at all.

I'm really happy to hear that your son's head rounded out despite not wearing the helmet all day, but I would never advocate that another person do the same. A baby's head is growing all 24 hours of the day. To have it off for upwards of 12 hours or more each day, a parent could be missing out on ample growth and reshaping for their baby's head. This is the reason they want the child wearing it all day.

Honestly, people MAY say stupid things or give a look but it's because they probably don't know any better. My son had one for 3 months and I found that the way that *I* reacted and looked at people guided the way they acted towards my son. If they asked something really stupid, I would just answer them. I took it more as an opportunity to teach them than to be insulted or offended. And most people, the majority actually, were really positive towards DS when he wore it!

I would never advise a mother to disobey her doctor. I was only stating my own story.

In my case my son was not an extreme case and I felt I was making the best choice for him.

Best of luck to all.

ITA. DS wore a helmet from 4 months to 8 months. The reason they wear it for 23 hours a day is because a child is constantly growing and there is no way to know when a baby will hit a growth spurt. It's imperative that a child wear it for the full day to get the best result.

That being said.. DS had no issues wearing the helmet at all, during the day or at night. It was harder on me than on him. Best decision we ever made. Please let me know if you need a recommendation for an orthotist. Ours was a life saver and dropped everything at a moment's notice to do our adjustments etc. I credit how good our result was with her excellent care and attention to my DS.

I agree that your child will get looked at but in our case I just flipped things around & used it as an educational tool to explain to people why he had it on. There were many people who were so responsive.

my ds didn't get it... but ped was starting to get concerned one side was flatting more... We ended up getting Boppy Noggin Nest head support.... and that helped keep his head from staying on one side.
