Ban on Casino Gambling lifted in NY State

(03/15/12) WOODBURY - Lawmakers have agreed to remove the ban on casino gambling beyond Indian reservations to keep gambling money in New York and create jobs.

The legislature has to begin the process of amending the state Constitution.

The process requires legislative votes this year and by the next legislative session.

Once completed, voters could see a public referendum as early as next year.

me too! I'm in Old Howard......although I have to say SO far I really haven't noticed an increase in traffic (but I also don't drive on Rockaway very often). And, my thought process is once a full fledged casino is in place at Aqueduct it is only a matter of time before the casino owner (Genting) gets their way and has high speed rail direct from midtown to Aqueduct (which I cannot WAIT for, my commute would be a huge upgrade from the stinky A train!!).....so I would imagine any tourists coming to visit the casino would most likely stay in NYC and use the high speed rail....I guess the biggest factor is whether more local NYC/LI peeps head there once it's a full casino since that would jam up the roads a bit more....it's kind of exciting and scary all the same time not knowing how it will pan out! lol

There's a lot more traffic on weekends in the immediate area. I can't imagine summer.

They were talking about putitng the new Javits center here in Ozone Park, so that would have a HUGE impact.

I've also heard a few rumors -

1) The Home depot next door will be kicked out when the lease is up next year and they will build a huge hotel

2) John Adams HS is closing and they will build a hotel there, too.

I would love to see better/faster transportation into Manhattan from the area (although bringing back the LIRR line might be tricky), but I'm worried about traffic and the kind of people it will attract to the neighborhood.

On the other hand, it could be great. All of th local businesses will do really well, we'll get some great new restaurants and it will revitalize the area.

We'll have to wait and see

For whatever reason, the machines are legal, but table games are not.

This new law would make it so they could put in backjack tables, craps, roulette, poker rooms, etc and make it more of a full fledged casino

I think this is awesome.

just keep it classy NY. that is all I ask.

While I may not have much of a "right" to say this since I am a little more removed in HB (over a "bridge" lol)

I feel like its here. . .we should hope that it thrives bc the only thing worse than a casino in your backyard is a FAILING casino in your backyard.

I have not been there but my parents love it and all of the old folks seem to like it!

I drive on Rockaway Blvd every day and have not noticed an increase in traffic BUT that is in the middle of the day, maybe the night is busier.

Now this could be interesting- my understanding is that Queens high schools are stuffed to the gills as it is- where will all those kids go?

I won't be shocked if they close Adams because the days are numbered for almost all big NYC high schools- but they've made so many small schools and have more overcrowding as a result- at least in my experience.

Re: Ban on Casino Gambling lifted in NY State

DH and I like to gamble, but I don't think it is a good idea. Look at what happened to AC. After the casinos came, it went from being like 50th highest per capita crime rate in the US to being #1. People living close to casinos have double the risk of having a gambling problem. The great idea of having all this extra "revenue" for the state-well, has it helped NJ, PA, MA that much?

Like I said, we go to AC and have been to Vegas, I am not against gambling. But I don't think it is such a great idea to open the area up to everything that comes with it. I am also not a fan of Genting.

Apparently Adams closing is a done deal. They are closing SO many schools. I don't uderstand it either because as it is kids are going to classes in trailers, includng at Adams and at RHHS, and both are HUGE schools. No idea where the kids are supposed to go. I have a new HS on my corner, but it's a magnet school.

ETA: It's possible they'll put a new school or several new schools in the John Adams building but if this casino takes off and the convention center happens, I think the economics will win out and they'll sell or lease the land for development. it's a HUGE property.

Complete agree here. Just came from upstate for work, staying near the Turning Stone Casino up there, and ended up eatting at one of their resturants....

that is a successful casino, it is still depressing seeing the group of people gambling, how many senior citizens gambling away their SS income, disabled people gambiling away their disability checks.......

granted there were some "normal" people out there having fun, but there were plenty of people who looked like they're comulsively playing the machines or the tables trying to win rent money for next week chain smoking....

I don't go to casinos, so I don't knwo what "normal" is in Vegas or AC, but to me it is a sad picture of gambling addictons, and I imagine although some people with the addiction from this area go and travel to gamble, there is probably a whole section of the population who doesn't, but will when a casino comes in the area.......

for me I am hopeful that property values will go up IF they are successful with adding high speed rail (which of course will take years for it to happen).....we could be a new commuter haven, like Forest Hills if we were only 20 minutes from Penn. And as far as comparisons of AC to Aqueduct, the biggest difference is location, just being part of NYC I would think they'd have an incentive to do it right and keep it classy as lots of tourist dollars will follow. And let's be honest there is nothing to do in this immediate area.....we could use some fresh shopping & dining options, and I would be very happy if they had a venue for concerts or theater, South Queens has been lacking for a long time....I really hope this revitalizes the area in a positive way, but that is all to be determined over the next few years.

And I cannot believe they would bulldoze Adams! I graduated there in 1998, it was a crazy school but I had great teachers and great memories.
