What do you think of no gift parties?
Would you prefer to go to a no gift party?
We just moved and everyone we know is pretty new. I would hate to burden them with gifts, especially since I am throwing a joint birthday party for the boys.
Have you ever attended a no gift party? Do you think it is a good or bad idea?

If I was invited to a no gift party, I would feel awkward just going to a party and not giving something. That's just me. So I would probably still bring a little something.

I agree. And if I didn't bring something, and others felt awkward so they did bring something, then I'd feel awful being the only one without a gift.

Would you feel obligated to buy 2 gifts?
I hate burdening people, especially people we don't know well.

I think it's a nice idea! I think that a lot of people would probably bring a little something even if the invite says no gifts, but that's ok.
I think that you could probably come up with cute wording on the invite to make the point that you want to celebrate with all your new friends and you aren't just inviting people so your kids have gifts to open (I would never think that, but other people might!!).

Re: What do you think of no gift parties?
or maybe just put on the invite.... to bring a book for your DS's to expand their library, that way its something small and people wont feel awkward?

Re: What do you think of no gift parties?
I dislike it. First I feel awkward bc I know people are going to bring stuff anyway. Second, sometimes people do it bc they hate "crap" or "plastic toys" etc and then it's like an "i'm better than you and my kids only play with toys made of organic bamboo with natural paints" kinda thing. I know ur reason is not that but I actually know someone that had a no gifts party bc of this.

It won't work. People will still bring something and those who don't feel like crap that they didn't bring something. I do like the book idea.

Re: What do you think of no gift parties?
*Personally*, I am not a fan. I just wouldn't feel right going to a party empty handed, even if the invite said to not bring gifts. I think most people probably would feel the same way. I wouldn't say anything one way or the other and if you get gifts just send really nice, extra special thank you's to everyone.

I have recieved a invite before that had this posted on the bottom.
“Your presence is the only present desired.”
But i also LOVE the book idea.

Re: What do you think of no gift parties?
I am doing a joint party and I did suggest that they get a joint gift for both my kids to enjoy, like a movie or game. But I do know these people pretty well. Another friend put on the invite that the gift could not exceed $5. It was fun trying to come up with ideas- I ended up getting his girls flip flops.

We just received an invite from my son's classmate at preschool. She had a normal invitation and she handwrote on the back, "No gifts, please. We hope you can make it."
This is actually the first no gift party we have been invited to. I plan to still give a gift. I'm pretty sure the mom just doesn't want to burden classmates. I know the mom and I think she just wants a good turnout.
The only other person who ever specified anything was a friend of ours requested that we spend no more than $20 on a gift. They are very generous people. I did stay within the $20 the mom specified. When we got to the party, EVERYONE got them these ridiculous gifts. I felt bad bringing the $20 gift. Of course at the next party they came to of ours, they gave $100.
