Re: cold cuts

I have been pretty solid with the no-no food list. I would love a hot dog, a corned beef sandwich or ham and swiss, but I figure I can wait a few mor months.

The funny thing is, it is not like I am eatying that healthy. I am eating all sorts of sweets, caffeine free diet coke and other things I should probably be stayin away from.

I would be careful about eating it a few days a week. That might be a bit excessive. You may want to speak with your dr... I do not mean that in any way rude each person is different and ive noticed drs give different women different advice due to a patients personal history...

Third pregnancy and same routine! My OB is very laid back, as am I. I stay away from alcohol, sushi and high mercury fish. I limit caffeine, but don't avoid it. Everything else in moderation. I don't think a few times a week is excessive. I know every person has a certain level of comfort, and that's fine!

Cold cuts contain nitrates and bacteria... I wont eat them due at of my own feelings of being cautios and my dr did tell me ONLY if i really have a craving for them but heat them up first.
I do crave some honey roasted turkey but not enough that it would outweigh the guilt... I would feel way too guilty so im just avoiding them.

Yeah, its actually on my list of things I can't eat. Clearly says NO cold cuts. So many doctors say different things though. I can't wait to get some subway. What bummed me out was when I heard that I can't eat it if BFing.

I am not sure where you got that info but there are no diet restrictions while BFing unless your child has an allergy.

As far as the deli meat I think eating in moderation from a reputable place is fine. Because of this thread DH is actually out getting me stuff for a turkey and cheese sandwich now. Chat Icon

Quite a few people have actually told me that the cold cuts and sushi would still be off limits if I BF. Kind of makes sense considering you're passing what you're eating to the baby. We don't drink alcohol then BF so I trust their advise. I will ask my dr.

You can absolutely have cold cuts and sushi while BFing. The only thing I'd continue to limit or avoid is high mercury fish. I'm not sure why anyone would think those are off limits. Depending on your comfort level, you can also have a glass of wine while BFing. Kellymom.com is a great BFing resource.

Re: cold cuts

As far as cold cuts, it's not really a moderation thing. If there's listeria, it doesn't matter how many times you've eaten cold cuts in the past. The risk of listeria is pretty low though. It really depends on your comfort level.

I've had turkey sandwiches during both pregnancies, but I personally prefer to heat them up. That's what my doctor advises and I'd rather be on the safe side.

Re: cold cuts

With my first pregnancy 18 months ago my OB said no cold cuts. This pregnancy I am seeing the SB Midwives and they said they are allowed. I've heard many people say their drs tell them different things. I eat cold cuts. I do not eat fish, any meat with pink...I hardly eat meat my body rejects it when I'm pregnant, I don't eat or drink anything diet or sugar free with fake sugar, even splenda. That is my own personal convictions.

I have been BF for 18 months. I was told that I can eat anything I want...cold cuts, fish, wine, even beer because it's suppose to help with supply issues. If you can drive you can nurse, that's the alcohol rule with BF. I had to cut out dairy and eggs because my son is allergic and when I got pregnant I of course stopped my glass or 2 of wine that I was having each month or other month.

I have to chime in here. . .
I had cold cuts with both pregnancies. All is fine. Just make sure you aren't getting it from some nasty place.

Everything in moderation, everything in moderation!! Chat Icon

I agree, it's not about moderation with cold cuts; either the listeria is there or it isn't. You could have one sandwich the whole PG and get it.

That said, I eat turkey all the time, but only from the deli near me that does a really brisk business--I don't get it from a bagel store or somewhere with not as much turnover. And I avoid Subway and Quiznos (even though heated it should be fine, the fact that it just sits out grosses me out).

Re: cold cuts

I have had cold cuts, chunk light tuna, and my regular sized coffee. I drink coffee every day. My doc told me the coffee as long as it is under 4 cups is totally fine.

I think that some docs are just more conservative than others. So it all depends on what they tell you, and what you are comfortable with.

The only things I do not have are alcohol. sushi and high mercury fish.

My first OB told me in moderation, but it wasn't becuase of Listeria it was because of the amount of salt in cold cuts.

I ate fresh cold cuts in my first pregnancy with no problems! I haven't had them yet bc I can't stomach them, but I will definitely have it as soon as I can. Just make sure they're fresh cut, thats all! People are going to be paranoid about any little thing...its up to you to decide. I also eat tuna fish salad once a week.

I am craving Subway after reading this thread! I eat cold cuts in moderation and stay way from raw fish, soft cheeses and tuna fish. I'm pretty laid back. Go with what is comfortable for you!

I ate them & tuna at least once a week during my first pregnancy. No issues whatsoever.

The only reason why I haven't had any during this pregnancy is because I can't even stomach the thought of them, and most other foods for that matter. Otherwise I would have eaten up!

My dr said everything in moderation is okay. Just don't go to the dirty bodega on the corner. If you go to the grocery store where the products are maintained at the proper temperature and is being used & replaced often, you are okay.

Besides, you wouldn't be eating much of anything if you worried about EVERYTHING you could get listeria/bacteria/nitrates from. We're talking salads, fruits & vegetables, etc.

And I find it quite funny when people say they refuse to eat coldcuts or tuna because of the listeria and bacteria, but head to McDonalds to eat the food there.

To each his own.

I dont go to McDonalds either... Theres no need for snarky comments... To each is own, I simply shared what my Dr told me and what I was PERSONALLY doing because Im very cautious... You dont know what Ive been through so I dont appreciate the sarcasm in your post...

There was absolutely no snarkiness OR scarcasm in my post whatsoever. If you thought so, that's your own issue.

What I was speaking, was the TRUTH. The highest cases of listeria and salmonella have been from fruits & vegetables, NOT coldcuts. And if you're concerned about mercury, then I hope you don't have any of those new LED lightbulbs that save you money because they have mercury in them too- and the chances of you breaking them and being exposed to the mercury is much higher than you eating tuna every once in a while.

You shared what you've heard from your doctor, and I've shared what I've heard from mine & everyone else & information I have read on my own. Why you can share your opinion & I can't without you calling me snarky or scarcastic is quite interesting, but whatever. And no, I don't know what you've been through and same goes for you & me, nor will I ask because it's not my business, but that's why I ended my post with "TO EACH HIS OWN."

Again,

TO EACH HIS OWN.

Cold cuts is one of the things I am pretty crazy about staying away from while prego. If I want them I do make them steaming in the microwave before eating. You have to be careful of listeria which is a very serious thing while prego.

I get the nitrate and perservative free natural turkey...but always have. I eat it regularly along with tuna once a week. I actually eat pretty much everything I want...even had a few pieces of sushi here and there and smoked salmon. I did the same with my DD and feel completely comfortable with it and feel zero guilt.

Re: cold cuts

Most women don't realize that there is more of a chance of listeria in vegetables and fruits than cold cuts...

The chances of getting listeria in the US at a reputable place is SO LOW. It happens, but it is rare.

You have to do whatever you're comfortable with. My doctors were always fine with cold cuts, and they did not have to be heated...they also told me to enjoy the occasional hot dog. I never worried about it.

I ate COLD turkey pretty much everyday, sometimes twice a day. Unless you are buying your cold cuts from some back door bodega, dont stress it.

EXACTLY what my doctor said! She said people freak out with the whole cold cut rules, meanwhile they are eating other foods that should be questioned. She said from my first pregnancy, as long as the place is clean and the food moves it's fine.
