BTDT Spinoff to Bottles: Sterilizing?

OK so I just had my shower, and one thing we got is the bottle sterilizer...

now I'm really confused because this is my first LO, but DH has so many nieces and nephews, he told me that you have to sterilize the bottles after every use???

like I feel like having to do them daily is bad enough, but if I go through all of my bottles before the day is over, I have to not only wash them but then sterilize them all again too??? before I get the next bottle(s) ready??

maybe this is common sense to everyone else but I really have no idea, and didn't think it would be so extensive to have to sterilize multiple times a day

I'm BFing and pumping, so hopefully I won't need to use all of my bottles in a day anyway, but I'm thinking of when I go back to work, my Dad and MIL will have the burden of this, at least one time during the day...and I want to make sure that they know what to do also...sterilizers were'nt out when my dad was doing bottles for me!

Yes, unfortunately, you should be sterilizing bottles and nipples after each use, especially with a newborn. This was one of the reasons I was recommended the Playtex Drop-Ins bottles. Not only did I love the bottles and the nipples that came with it, but all I had to worry about is cleaning and sterilizing the rings and the nipples.

Ok, adding a question to this post..hope you dont mind. By sterilizing after each use, does that just mean washing them (like by hand) or having to boil the bottles or put them in the dishwasher?

With my DD, I never put the bottles in the dishwasher. I would wash them and then at the end of the day, boil a huge pot of water and drop all of them and their parts in it. It wasn't a hassle, just have enough bottles so you can do it daily or every other day. I did this with my pump parts as well. Except, when I was at work and couldn't sterilize the parts - I'd just wash, reuse and then sterilize at night.

we handwashed and used the counter top sterilizer everyday. sometimes multiple times per day (when he was eating every 3 hours). thats why i liked the counter top sterilizer- i could run it for a few bottles, which i wouldnt do with a dishwasher.

around 9 months, then we started throwing them in the dishwasher at the end of the day and skipping the countertop sterilizer.

better to be safe than sorry- especially after hearing about that poor baby that died because of bacteria in his bottle. Chat Icon

we used tommee tippee bottles and sterilizer.

Yes you have to hand wash them and then sterilize them...and yes, after each use. Thats why its good to have enough bottles to last you through the whole day of feeding and then sterilize them all once at the end of the day.
