I know its early....Memorial Day parties, yay or nay??

So I know its early, but DH & I were talking about our future DS #2's christening. Because our guest list has grown by over 15 people (mainly due to kiddos) I know we cannot host it in our condo clubhouse, so we'd probably consider doing it in my mom & dad's backyard.

We'd also consider doing a bounce house thing to entertain the kids (about 15 of them). Especially our son (he'll be 3)...there is no way he'd sit at a family 5+ hour party with nothing to do.

So anyway, do Catholic churches tend to do Christenings memorial day weekend? If so, would you consider a party? Honestly we don't think many of our guests would go away.

We are kinda limited because of:
1. my brother's wedding end of April
2. two spring/June weddings
3. showers for those events
etc

Every church differs so you need to contact your parish.

Even if your "guests" don't go away, most do family gatherings or gather with friends.

My friend got married in July 4. Out of 400+ guest she invited only 180 attended due to other plans on the 4th.

So I wild think a significant amount would not show on a holiday, but I also know our parish doesn't do christenings on holiday weekends.

Dds bday is May24 th and we would NOT her party memorial day weekends b/c we know people always have set plans. It's one of those weekends that people do the same thing every year.

I say no to plan a party that weekend. Maybe the Friday of b/c can leave sat and have til monday?

We had our ds1 christening the sunday of memorial day weekend. I had asked ahead of time if ppl were going to be away, and with enough notice, it worked out great! We had it at a country club, then we had a pretty big memorial day bbq back at our house. So, we had quite a long day of celebrating! I say go for it

see it would be a day party (ie starting at 2pm) PLUS it would be the sat or sun, not the Monday...hmmm food for thought

My opinion is that if people want to be there, they will. I plan my life around MY life, no one else's. My DS's birthday is 9/5 which almost always falls on Labor Day weekend. We have the party on Saturday or Sunday of that weekend, since not everyone has off on that Monday. If someone has plans to go away that weekend, more power to them. I'm not changing my plans Chat Icon I say do what you want and if you give people enough notice and they can make it, they will.

I totally agree with this. My DS was born on May 26, which happens to fall on Sat this year and will be his 1st b-day. We are already planning on having the party that day since it's his actual b-day. If people have plans for the weekend, oh well, that's the way it goes sometimes.

I say go for it. The only time I hesitate for holiday weekend parties is when many guests are out of town. Sometimes people think it will be easier for OOT guests, but travel rates and hotel rates are always higher these weekends.

I say nay. I get bitter when I am obligated to go to something on a holiday weekend - especially in the summer.

You would have to check with your church to see if that weekend is when they do christenings. My church only does them the first Sunday of the month.

I say do it whenever it works for you. If it falls on memorial day weekend, then do it then. It's a special occasion and those who want to be there will find a way. It's really not a big deal for people to change their plans for one year.

We usually have plans for Memorial Day weekend.

That being said, if you can't do it any other time: plan it for then. Your closest family members & loved ones will make you the priority.

Re: I know its early....Memorial Day parties, yay or nay??

DS1 was born May 28th 2009. His last 2 birthdays I've had over Memorial Day weekend and never had any issues with people coming.
All my friends with young kids don't go away and some family knows we throw a big party then.
We do it outside (as long as the weather is nice).
Kids play and parents relax and enjoy the nice weather.
For his 2nd bday party we had a pool party and weather was perfect. I was 9 months pregnant and wasn't going in the pool LOL

Personally, I don't believe in scheduling celebrations on holiday weekends. I think most people, myself included, find it annoying and many people have lots of plans on holiday weekends even if they aren't going away. If you can, I would try and schedule it for another weekend but that's just me. Chat Icon

I see a difference between a birthday party that weekend since most people usually celebrate birthdays as close to the actual day as possible. For a Christening, you have a choice of doing it almost at any time (barring other already planned ocassions of course). I would do it before of after.

If it's your only choice, then go for it! Like someone said above, those closest to you will be there!
