so sad...saw a car accident today..
it must have just happened. the suv was in terrible shape, i thought to myself someone was badly hurt or died, esp since they closed both directions of north ocean ave in farmingville. I just read it was a 15 month old baby that died. I am so sad.

The child was in a car seat, she was not properly restrained. The straps were probably too loose. Another article...

I live just down the road from here. I hate North Ocean. People speed, cut people off and blow through red lights. At the bottom of that article it says that the little girl WAS strapped in the car seat

I saw that accident too. I knew when I saw the crime scene van pull up it wasn't good. Its never good to hear that someone died, but a 15 month old just hurts so much more.

So sad.
Over 80% of child restraints are used incorrectly. I have no reason to believe I'm in the 20% so I get my seat's installation and my method of strapping DD in her seat checked each time we change seats and once every 6 months or so. I urge everyone else to do so as well.

This was preventable, and it kills me. It is tragic that a life was cut short for no reason.
Get your seats checked. Learn how to use them, and use them properly all the time.
A prior poster said 80% are used incorrectly, I can tell you that number is actually higher in real life. I've heard better estimates of 98-99% which are much more accurate. I can tell you based on my own experiences at checks that I've yet to see a 100% correct seat.
Your child's seat should move no more than 1" side to side or front to back. The harness should be "snug as a hug", not allowing pinching at the shoulder with no excess slack in the hip area. You should not have any puffy jackets or strap covers, buntings etc on, interfering with harness tightness.
FM me or carseatsafey (chris), post a thread if you have a question. Go to www.safekids.org if you need a tech in your area.

Re: so sad...saw a car accident today..
This is so sad. I just saw on News12 that the grandmother is going to be charged for driving without a license.
It says the baby was in a carseat, but not properly restrained, and thrown from the vehicle. I wonder if the carseat itself wasn't buckled in, or the child wasn't buckled in the harness. So sad and so preventable

Re: so sad...saw a car accident today..
It sickens me to see this bc not only was.the grandmother driving without a license, she had an uninsured car & it says she was.also summoned for not having the proper car restraint for a 4 yr old. This poor child had her life taken from her bc the grandmothers negligence. She deserves felony charges as the article states she could be facing.

Re: so sad...saw a car accident today..
The child's mother was also in the vehicle. I tend to put more blame on her for not ensuring the safety of her child. Whether or not she new the license issues of the driver I can't say, but she should have ensured that her child was restrained properly.
Also, the article on Newsday stated that the seat was belted in but that the child wasn't properly restrained in the seat.
IMO, they should both be charged.

Thank you very much for posting. I have been meaning to look for a place to get my carseats checked and now I can find a tech in my area. I am making the time to do this ASAP.

My first thought was maybe the toddler unbuckled his seat, grandma or mom was reaching back to help and lost control of the car. But since the 4 year old wasn't in a carseat or booster, sadly I'm not sure that was case. Neglectful

Re: so sad...saw a car accident today..
This tragedy is so awful I feel sick thinking about it.
I am a nut about dd in the carseat making sure she is strapped correctly. I haven't had my seat inspected but after this I am going to.
I drop off a friends dd to preschool every day and I see some little ones as young as 2 just put in those lap booster seats. I feel like people just don't know how serious or what seats are actually best for their child.
