Let's talk infant carriers/strollers

So I am going to be registering sometime soon, and have been doing some research on infant carseats and strollers. I need help! Chat Icon

So, if I were to buy an infant carseat with a base to use as a stroller, when my LO grows out of it, what kind of stroller do I get?

Can I put a newborn in a regular stroller?
What the heck is an umbrella stroller, and when is that used?

Sorry to sounbd so clueless but I really am!

Also - recommend your infant seat/stroller!
Thanks!Chat Icon

Re: Let's talk infant carriers/strollers

I picked a stroller that I will use for the baby for an extended time period and then it had an adapter for the carrier.

I have the travel systems because they are heavy. Some people will get the snap and go for the infant seat and use that instead of the adapter with the stroller but I think its just more to buy and store.

There are several ways you can go

1. a System-- which is an infant carrier and a stroller which has an attachment that can be used to snap the carrier into. I am not terribly familiar with the systems as friends and family steered me away from them bc of their bulkiness and weight-- although some parents swear by them.

You would put the baby in the carrier and attach to stroller when he /she is an infant and probably use the actual stroller when they are older.

2. You can purchase an infant carrier and then another stroller with an attachment for it or something like a snap n go which is just a frame basically to use as a stroller with your infant carrier-its very compact and lightweight.
If youi went the stroller route you could obviously use the stroller after your baby grows out of the infant carrier (less than 1 year) or separatly from it (although i guess you would have to detach the accessory). With the snap and go you would use it only with the carrier and then would have to purchase another stroller... either something like a fancy carriage like stroller, or an umbrella stroller or something in betweem.

Fancy carriage like strollers/prams-- i.e. bugaboo which are $$$ and bigger, but offer a "great ride" but are not compact

Umbrella stroller- fairly inexpensive, no bells and whistles generally, light weight and fold up very easily- not for long walks- more for short trips in and out of the mall etc.

In between- (I think there is an actual name for this category but I cant think of it) Baby Jogger, Maclaren. These offer compactability, moderate prices and a better ride than an umbrella stroller but not as nice as the pram /carriages. Can be used for longer walks but compact enough for in and out trips.

I believe all of these can be used for young infants as liong as they recline back-- not sure about the umbrelle stroller though.

I purchased the Graco Snug Ride- which is an infant carrier ($100-150) and the snap and go. I also went with a citi mini for my stroller.

Hope this helps!

You can't put a newborn in an umbrella stroller. They are (usually) inexpensive and compact, and have handles like an umbrella (and fold up a little bigger than one too. They are more for when the baby can support themselves.

We have the travel system (carriage/stroller with attachable infant car seat and car seat base). Plus I got a snap and go style base. I plan on using the snap and go base for a little while longer (DS is 3 months). But once he is 6 months and can fully support himself I'll put him in the carriage, and leave the seat in the car.

Re: Let's talk infant carriers/strollers

we went w a travel system b/c we felt that worked best for us, and even though i agree w other posters that they are heavier and bulkier, we wanted something that would grow w our family. we were lucky though, a friend had a snap n go to let us borrow, so we got that as a freebie for when we want the lighter option.

whatever you decide to go with, make sure you test it out in the store. i had picked out our travel system ahead of time based on reviews online and from family & friends, and luckily that was the one that felt the best to us. we are both pretty tall people, and it was the only one we felt we weren't slouching down to push around. but everyone has different needs, so i'm sure there will be one you find meets all of yours and is comfortable for you. just don't be shy to take them for a test drive around the aisle!

good luck! Chat Icon

ETA: sorry...i didn't say which travel system and you asked for that. we got the chicco keyfit 30 cortina . HTH!!

Just wanted to add that on the travel systems the infant seat doubles as the car seat that can be used up to roughly 30 pounds (not sure about the Snap n Go's).

I went with the Keyfit 30 Magic carseat and the new Chicco version of the snap and go. For later, I registered for the City Mini. I have a small trunk and am kind of a wimp so I wanted light weight and comapct options!

I have a Graco tarvel system (Quattro Tour I think) and I love it. The carries is the car seat and snaps into the stroller frame and the stroller on it's own we were using from like 6 weeks if she was laying down. I don''t mind the weight of the stroller that some ppl complain about. I hate the snap and go, it is to light, the handle is too short for me and I don't feel like she is "proctected" in it. The stroller is much sturdier, IMO. It also opens and closes so easily.

Can I ask where you got this (the chicco carseat and snap and go)? Sounds like just what I'm looking for.
