CIO again at 18.5 months? update!!

Update!
He slept through last night! From 730 to 7am! I don't get it. Not a peep from him. The only difference from last night and the past few nights is that we DIDNT give him ibuprofen? I wonder if it was upsetting his stomach? Maybe he just wasn't feeling well. Who knows though, he could be up again tonight. There is no rhyme or reason...

_________________________________________

The past few nights have been HELLL!

DS is usually a very good sleeper (715-7m). When DS wakes in the middle of the night, it is always around 2-3am. For the past few nights, he has been waking and screaming for like 2 hours! I am trying SO hard not to go in (nothing is wrong, diaper OK, no fever, not sick ... could be teething but we give him ibuprofen) but he goes nuts.

I am wondering if it is nightmares?

Last night, he started at 1130. Screaming at the top of his lungs, "mommy, daddy, uppie, please Chat Icon Chat Icon , NO", all these words and it breaks my heart. Chat Icon

DH can sleep thru it but I cannot. I literally lay there and stare at the monitor, its awful.

We always end up breaking down and going in. We change him, we give him more ibuprofen and try to get him to relax before putting him back in the crib. He relaxes with his blankey and paci and we go out. 10 minutes later, same thing Chat Icon Chat Icon I think that at this point, he is doing it because he knows that eventually we will come back in - even if 2 hours later. Last night we resorted to giving him milk at 1am ... havent done that in like 12 months.

Could be be hungry? He has been eating EVERYTHING in sight recently.

Anyone else going through this? SO awful but I think we need to let him cry tonight. I might have to sleep in the basement Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: CIO again at 18.5 months?

My DD is 17 months and she did this last night....she woke up at like midnight and was crying for me. I gave her the paci and 10 mins later she was up crying again. So I gave in and let her sleep in our bed and after tossing and turning a bit she finally fell asleep. I hope this doesn't happen again tonight. I was thinking maybe it was a nightmare.

i thought for a brief second about bringing him into our bed but I don't want to start that habit. I even considered getting my pillow and blanket and sleeping on the floor next to his crib, it was that bad.

in the end, I didnt. again, afraid of starting bad habits. Chat Icon

I hear you...I didn't want to bring in with me either but I felt bad because I thought it was a nightmare and she wanted to get comforted.

sounds like nightmares. .but I also think you are doing too much when you go in. No need to change his diaper or feed him. Just him up.. calm him down and put him back and walk out.. that's it!! you are waking him too much by changing him and feeding him. Just calm him and back to bed.. even rock a bit but no diaper or bottle in my opinion.

Re: CIO again at 18.5 months?

I would not bring him in your bed- if you aren't a co-sleeper and don't want to be- don't start now! I hear it is hard to stop once you start.

It sounds like your little guy needs to learn to self-soothe. My older DS (now almost 4) has a lovey that he has slept with since he was about 9 months old. He always holds it tight when he is tired, sick, etc and sleeps with it every night,, along with many other tiny stuffed "Friends". I think it helps him feel safe and not alone.

My 19 month old does not have a special lovey but does have several little stuffed toys in his crib that he likes to play with.

I have slept on the floor of their room sometimes, but only when they are sick and having a tough night.

I have the book Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child. I think it addresses situations like this.

I agree with the PP who said no diaper changes, keep the room dim. When my 19 month old occasionally wakes up crying (usually teething), I just turn on the nightlight, go in, rock him for about 5 mins and put him back in the crib.

Chat Icon GL! I am sure it is just a phase. Usually good sleepers go back to being good sleepers!!

every child is different. When my DD was teething I would put her in my bed. That was the only exception. I thought it was going to be hard after the teething to get her to sleep back in her crib but she gave me no problem at all. Yesterday was a rare occasion that I put her in my bed but every child is different.

To the OP-I agree don't do any diaper changes, feeding. I would avoid all eye contact, rock a little bit and my DD would eventually go back to sleep.

its a growth spurt. DS had the same thing. I'd get up with him and lay in the dark on a sofa until he fall asleep then I'd move him back to his crib. It lasted about 10 days.

This is my DD to the T!!!!! She is 18.5 months, uses a blankie to calm down and has been doing the same thing. Unfortunately, she does this every once in a while and we let her CIO. Somethimes up to 1 hr 45 minutes. I stare at the video monitor too as hubby snores!!! It passes and gets shorter every night. Is your LO prone to ear infections?? My DD is and it is usually followed by an ear infection about a week into the phase with no fever and no other signs. Good luck!Chat Icon

he has a lovey and a paci that he self soothes with (another issue because when he is mid screaming, he gets ****** and throws them out Chat Icon and there is NO way he is going back down without them)...

he is teething but I think he cut the last eye tooth. he has ALL teeth except 2 year molars.

DH thinks we should change his diaper - he feels that if he is very wet at 2am, that could be contributing but I agree that we shouldnt. I never change him, DH does when he goes in Chat Icon Ill try to explain to him why we shouldnt.

i feel like we are damned either way. if we dont go in, eventually he throw the paci and blankey out (throws everything out) and then he cant self soothe. maybe this is a good time to get rid of the paci if he throws it out Chat Icon Chat Icon

also, i thought about ear infection but he has no other signs - no fever, no runny nose, not iritable during the day at all. He did cry for 1 hour when we put him down to sleep at 715 last night though, something he NEVER does. Chat Icon

i Chat Icon its a phase.

I agree. I'd try to feed him more food during the day. No necessarily bigger meals, but stick a drinkable yogurt or cheese etc. in during the day. My son grew 7 inches between his 2 and 3 year appointmentChat Icon nd did have some trouble sleeping in the 1st half of the year.

we had another awful night Chat Icon up at 245 screaming. i left him until 345 when I couldnt take it anymore. He had tossed out his paci and blankey so I gave them to him and he layed down instantly. He was ok for 15 mins and then cried for a few minutes every half hour for the rest of the night Chat Icon I dont get it... maybe it is his last canine coming in. we are all so tired.
