He got cranky..had a cold Usually...woke up at night...sometimes off balance..

Dr. check ears.. always infected or fluid that would turn infected.

Always Antibiotics.. after a year of constant infections.. we got tubes.

on Meds..it cleared or didn't hurthim withing 24 -48 hours.

also gave motrin or tylenol for pain the first day or two before the antibiotics kicked in.

Re: talk to me about ear infections, if dc ever had one

She got very cranky one night, spiked a fever of around 100 ish, then got a red face...looked like a sunburn almost.

This was right after having had a cold.

The ped said her ear was red, fluid in it etc
They said the red face was from the fever

They gave antibiotics for 10 days- went back for recheck- they said it was still infected- even though her fever was gone and she was acting 100% fine.

Gave her another round of a different antibiotic and it cleared it up

Hasn't had one since

On our first ear infection over here too, and it's a double Chat Icon

DS was a bit cranky and pulling at his ear. No fever. He's had a bit of a cold too. Dr looked in his ears, but didn't say what she saw, just that both ears were infected. Dr put him on antibiotics for 10 days. I have a recheck Thanksgiving weekend.

Re: talk to me about ear infections, if dc ever had one

the dr. checks his ears and they're red and inflammed. as far as ME being able to tell, most times I wouldnt know..never ran a fever, didnt have pain. I happened to be there for a checkup when they first started and he freaked out when we tried touching his ears. One side would clear up, the other would get infected.

the last time we had one though was a doozy..ran high fevers, miserable, cranky and had an Upper Resp. Infection with it too.

was treated with antibiotics..various kinds

Re: talk to me about ear infections, if dc ever had one

DS woke one morning when he was 14 months old with a high fever (102) and was very tired and cranky all day. He would NOT sleep lying down and the only thing we could do was hold him upright. He just wanted to be held which was unlike him at that age. The ped didn't want to see him until after 24 hrs., but we took him to PM Peds later that day anyway. Another ped in our practice was actually on call and took a look, saw a little fluid, and said it *might* be the start of an infection. Antibiotics were prescribed and DS was much better within a few days.

Re: talk to me about ear infections, if dc ever had one

How did dr. diagnose?
DR would look in her ears. End of story. If she saw the doctor, by the time we got to be more frequent with them we all knew a cold, a week, an infection.

Fluid? Temp? Green mucus?
WE would see all three or none at all. She would occasionally get cranky and cry or feverish and slow. I very rarely saw green mucus but sometimes I guess. There was even a time I took her in for a well visit and they looked in her ears to two RAGING ear infections. But she had no other symptoms or crankiness.

Did you give antibiotics?
Yes. Every type known to man. Only one had a bad side affect otherwise, we used them all. There was once or twice we used nothing because it was a smaller infection and seemed to be clearing up on its own.

How long did it take to clear up?
On average 2 weeks.

Antibiotics did not always make her feel better (even without adverse reaction) just like mama, AJ and I both get worse before we get better with drugs. I don't know why but antibiotics seem to tear our systems down instead of boost them up. So time to time she & I will take anitbiotics for something and actually feel worse.

After nearly a year and a half of constant ear infections we got tubes.. been great ever since.

How did dr. diagnose?
- went to doc, looked in his ears

Fluid? Temp? Green mucus?
- fluid, temp, fussy

Did you give antibiotics?
- yes. Zpack is a waste of time. Go with Suprex.

How long did it take to clear up?
- ususally with one round of meds. Sometimes two.

We went to a new dr. I don't trust completly, and its our first ear infection.

Re: talk to me about ear infections, if dc ever had one

Doc always diagnosed by seeig the fluid in his ears. I could tell when he acts a little different, cranky and/or pulling at his ears. Sometimes a fever and sometimes he just seems he had a little cold

Got antibiotics every time. He wouldn't use the same one each time. Usually every other time. Mason did better with one then another and i can't think of what it was

Cleared up after a few days of being on meds. He had lots of ear infections last Fall and Winter and then cleared up. Been good since march. Knock on wood!

Re: talk to me about ear infections, if dc ever had one

My dd would spike a fever for a couple of days. The ped checks her ears and will diagnose by redness and fluid. Shes usually put on amiocillin (spelling Chat Icon ) for 10 days and wants to see her after that to recheck.

Re: talk to me about ear infections, if dc ever had one

DD#2 has had 2 severe (ears drums bulging) but wasn't in a lot of pain (told she has a very high tolerance) she wasn't complaining at all the 1st time and the 2nd time was saying it only hurt a little bit. She never had a fever, no runny nose before, during or after. She was giving antibiotics both times.

DD#1 has never had antibiotics for anything. She had one around the same time as DD#2 had her 2nd one. It wasn't severe, she was complaining about it but motrin relieved the pain. They didn't give her antibiotics and "watched and waited" and it cleared up on its own. She did have a fever - but she had some strange virus and had a fever the full week before the ear infection.

I think the new standard is that under 1 they give antibiotics, over 1 but in a lot of pain or severe ear infection they give antibiotics. But if they are over 1 and not in a lot of pain and it isn't severe they prefer to watch it for a few days and hold off on the meds.

My girls have had 2 between them. I only use antibiotics for an infection, not fluid. My doctor prefers not to treat unless there it is infected.

Re: talk to me about ear infections, if dc ever had one

My DD is 18 months and is on her 9th ear infection!Chat Icon She has never had a fever, but will either pull on her ears, or place her hand over her ear. Most of the time, she will wake up in the middle of the night screaming and will not go back to sleeep if I lay her down but will sleep on me while sitting. Apparently, laying down flat makes more pressure in her ears and therefore more pain. The doctor looks into her ears and tells me it is inflamed, red, and infected. It takes about 2-3 days for her to seem better, although it has taken 2 rounds of antibiotics on more than one occassion after the 10 days.

The 1st time @ 9 months olf DS was up screaming bloddy murder ALL night, thrashing around uncontollablyand EVERY time after.....we had NO clue what was wrong as there was no fever. Went to the Dr. the next day because he was screaming on and off all day like that....ear infection diagnosed by Dr.

The 12-14 times after?Chat Icon I knew each time before he went. DS has the same syptoms EVERY time he gets an ear infection. He is up multiple times, crying, thrashing around or just whiney. RARELY does he get fever with them.

Turns out DS has a fairly severe alllergy to cats which was diagnosed by an allergist AFTER the ENT wanted to put tubes in to "help keep the ears free of fluid". I kept questioning WHAT was making the fluid appear all the time. I noticed he would get a runny nose then BAM 1-3 days later full blown ear infection!!

Sinc rehoming my kitties, no more allergy meds, no more fluid & no more ear infectionsChat Icon

He did have one last month as the result of a bad cold but it was his 1st in over a year!!

5 day antibiotics don't do so well for him as he is so immune to most stuff from the frequent need.......tried it last month but needed to go back for another antibiotic a week later as he wasn't cleared up.
