will your toddler fall asleep in the car?

We just got back from a loooong road trip almost 8 hours... DS slept maybe 1.5 hours, he normally sleeps 3-4 hours in a crib. He wasn't too miserable, mostly chanting "I want to go outside" a lot ... but

He never was much for sleeping in the car seat. But I wonder why not.

this is why i make sure that DS is home for his naps. at home he'll sleep 2-3 hours. in the car...maybe 1 hour. its not as comfortable as his crib.

Re: will your toddler fall asleep in the car?

I drive to see my parents OOS 1x/mth (4h ride). If I go during nap time I might get an hour (doubtful) while my 19 mth old will do about 2. Still shorter than both their normal naps.

So I usually go closer to bedtime...most of the time they are asleep within 1/2 h...

Re: will your toddler fall asleep in the car?

We haven't gone for a long car ride in a while. DD#1 falls asleep in the car on the way home from my ILs every single day. She is 3.5yo and refuses to nap.

DD#2 will fall asleep if we're out and about, but as soon as the car stops she wakes up. She also will not sleep very long (Usually no more than 30mins)

Re: will your toddler fall asleep in the car?

Nope.
My DD needs IDEAL conditions to sleep.
Which means- her crib and her crib only.
With the sound machine on
And the shades drawn
And her special bear.

It's maddening.

she will sleep in the car, and luckily will transfer unless it's been too long.

Yes, both my kids will sleep in the car no problem. The only downside is that they can't be transferred to their beds. Both of them wake up almost immediately as soon as the car is turned off.

Yep. He is like me and will sleep just about anywhere. He slept the whole 4+hours home from DW. It was awesome.

My newborn ONLY sleeps in the car, it seems! Naps are a struggle at home, but once he's in the car, he's OUT!

Will that change once he's older, I wonder?

my DD sleeps much less in the car than at home. Even if its her nap time, i get an hour if im lucky. She also always wakes when we slow down, get off on an exit or stop at a light. Chat Icon

Re: will your toddler fall asleep in the car?

Yes but not as long as in the crib - maybe 1/2 to 1 hour if we're on a long trip. She needs to be face down, and can't do that in a car seat.

Only if it's nap time or bedtime. She does not sleep in he stroller or carseat. Never did. It's annoying. When we drive long I try and leave a little before her nap. She's ok in the car for a little bit maybe 1/2 hr 1 hr tops then nap time for maybe 1-1 1/2 hrs. The rest of the time she's screaming her head off. She is not Pleasant I. The car.

I do not sleep on anything moving. Dh falls asleep the second he sits down if he's not driving. I wish she was like him but she's not.

Re: will your toddler fall asleep in the car?

OMG yes! LOL

Heck if I'm not careful and interacting enough with her she'll fall asleep in around 20mins or so. I have nothing too long to travel to lately so I won't know how long she'd stay out but I know she does sleep easily and like her mama.. she'll sleep anywhere through any sounds. Chat Icon She's 3

We took her to Iowa (17hr drive) for Easter and the gal slept a very large majority of it. WAY more than her normal nap. I purposely got her up and out of the car every 4hrs because I didn't want her overnight sleep time totally ruined. It wasn't. She was 2

At 9m we moved to TX and she slept again most of the trip from NY to TX only waking up every 3hrs for food and interaction for about an hour then back to sleep.

I gotta say.. I LOVE that ability of hers! Chat Icon

For the first 3 months of life ds was like this, then he became more mobile and aware and car rides no longer fun.
