Nothing IMO. I was built for this!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Being a SAHM is what I've always wanted so I didn't find anything scary about it. I love being home with my DD 24/7 and I don't miss my job even for a second. In the beginning it was hard to adjust to one income but it's all worked out. We struggled early on but now between paying off some debt, being wise with our money, and my DH's promotion, raises, and bonuses we are doing much, much better thankfully.

As for our days, being an elementary school teacher prior to having my DD has helped because I have a ton of resources and ideas to share with her every day. It's sorta like PreK over here on most days!! Chat Icon I sing a lot of songs with her, we do all kinds of projects and arts and crafts things, we read A LOT, she cooks and bakes with me every day, we watch movies, play outside, go to the park, go to the library, run errands, play games, do puzzles, etc. etc. Never a dull moment! I am back to being a SAHM mom now after having always worked at least some part time. For us right now, with #3 on the way, it's not having my little bit of extra money coming in. And DH being on the verge of wanting to quit but can't...

Nothing. Except maybe having to get a job! But we live within our means and I'm blessed to do what I've dreamed of.

Finances...and the fact that if anything happens to the kids while DH is away I am on my own at the hospital with 2 kiddies by myself.

Re: What is the scariest thing about being a SAHM?

It is a huge lifestyle change, but I have not found it scary.

I don't miss working at all. I love being home with my boys (age 3 and 17 mos) even though some days are better than others!!!

My DH is very conservative financially. We would never have given up my salary if we could not do this comfortably. We had no debt except the mortgage, have an emergency savings account, and still put money towards our retirements, college savings accounts, extra mortgage payments. I am still able to do fun classes/activities with the kids and family vacations. We moved OOS, which is a big reason that we were able to afford to do this.

Making the decision to stay home was one of the best moves I have made in my life.

Right now my younger son is dunking his head under the bathroom sink while I sit on the floor typing on my laptop.

You do whatever you need to do to survive the day in my opinion! Chat Icon

Re: What is the scariest thing about being a SAHM?

Well mine is different LOL The "Scariest" thing, and i think about it almost every day, is that i willl fall down the stairs, hit my head or get hurt enough that I can't move, and DS will fall out of the crib or pick up some, thing from the floor and choke or do whatever to get hurt and I won't be able to help him.

But, I am odd Chat Icon

The money thing IS scary, but I have faith it will work out.

ITA!!!!! I think about that too. I am always worried about something happening to me during the day and then my DD is left alone until DH comes home. Or worse, getting in a car accident and she and I are separated and she's all alone and scared. I know, I know, kinda morbid thinking but ever since I had her I worry so much more about things now. Things I never really gave much thought to before.

Re: What is the scariest thing about being a SAHM?

No nap days! I NEED that nap time for my own sanity! As much as I can complain to my DH or others about how crazy being at home is, I wouldn't trade it for anything!

2nd-i don't deal with this nonsense, but i have friends that do...
the world can view sahms anyway they want to....but your dh totally has to get it.
he has to view what you do as priceless. you cannot be replaced.

Ditto! The scariest thing would be if this wasn't so.

Its not about finances, I grew up with broke parents, I had beautiful childhood. Its about the mutual understanding and appreciation.

Re: What is the scariest thing about being a SAHM?

Besides money worries...I think it's hard to not have social interaction with adults. Also, If DC is especially fussy on any given day...you're all alone to deal with it...sometimes it's enough to make you bonkers when you haven't been able to make time for a bite to eat or take a REAL shower...you know...like one where you can actually shave BOTH legs without having to run out and see why the baby is wailing.

those things get easier with time and the social interaction is easily fixed if you have or make other mommy friends.

I also agree it can be tough when you've run out of things to keep DC entertained early on.

Also, I can remember being naive enough to think that if I ever was a SAHM or housewife...I would have the house sparkling and dinner on the table when DH got home etc maybe even get some GARDENING done hahaha Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon It is NOT that easy...especially if your child is fussy and needing your undivided attention / wanting to be held all the time. who the hell was i kidding? what did i think? I was going to be some martha stewart or Joan cleaver or something? I WISH!

I won't sugarcoat it--the scariest thing was finding out DH had cancer, and I had no job, no insurance. Luckily, he went in remission and not long after that, I started looking for work, though it took awhile to find something.

The first week I was home alone with DS, I was scared of being responsible for this tiny baby, but I did get over that fast.

Re: What is the scariest thing about being a SAHM?

the most scariest thing for me was not making my own money... but i decided to change that and started doing Tastefully simple.. with my own hours on my time it is so manageable and i feel more secure.

the other thing is getting sick.. when that happens DH has to take off if its absolutely necessasry .. its just not fun

ugh, yes. this goes a looong way. hate to say it, but i really do have to remind HIM of all of this from time to time. but once he gets it, it's better. but then he gets like, amnesia or something. Chat Icon

that and coming up with new ways to keep them engaged...and finding the strength during my pms-ey days to not plop him in front of the tv for long periods of time Chat Icon

and falling.

i have this dumb fear when i do something that i may fall doing. fear that i will not be able to get up, and my darling will be all alone. i sometimes calculate the hours he will be left alone until someone comes home : |

Re: What is the scariest thing about being a SAHM?

The fact that very few people realize what SAHMs do all day. I sometimes wonder if the rest of the world thinks I hang out in my PJs and play peek a boo all day long.

not dumb...a few weeks after coming home from hospital (maybe 2nd week or so) I fell down the stairs and all I could think was "OMG what if I had him in my arms. OMG what if I was alone in the house and this had happened...I didn't have my cell phone on me to call anyone if I had been really hurt (broken bones, wind knocked out) or what if i had knocked myself out? he could have been crying in his crib for hours!
