UPDATE w/another question! Sympathy gift: Are brownies or cookies inappropriate?

Our next door neighbor's mom passed away. She was 81 and in a nursing home at the time and had become ill, so this wasn't unexpected.

We're not super close with them, meaning we don't hang out, but my husband often talks with them (he's usually outside while I'm inside with the kids.)

Unfortunately we missed yesterday's wake since we only found out last night from another neighbor and we're unable to make today's wake and tomorrow's service.

Should I send something to the house? My mom mentioned a fruit basket, but I was thinking something like Cheryl's Cookies or Fairytale Brownies as they have two boys (11 and 13).

Opinions please! Are cookies or brownies inappropriate? (FWIW, both sites offer sympathy notes/cards with their baskets.)

Question #2
If I were to send baked goods, it won't be there until Tuesday or Monday at best.

Am I better off sending flowers from a local florist so that it arrives tomorrow or should I go ahead as planned and go with the food that will arrive on Tuesday?

I sent brownies to my friend's family when their father passed away. They were greatly appreciated.

Absolutely appropriate and very thoughtful. When my papa passed away, we received cookies, edible arrangement, all that kind of stuff and it came in very handy when we had guests stop over

I think it's fine as long as the packaging is clearly sympathy, vs something cheery, kwim?

I still would not send flowers...I am not a fan of sending flowers in general though. I would rather wait and send something more "usable".

That's the way I feel about it. I feel like people get so many flowers and they're a waste. Chat Icon

I think given that they have kids who will definitely appreciate them, and that you can include a sympathy note, it would be completely appropriate and appreciated. And I think Monday or Tuesday is fine.

At this time I wouldn't send them anything they have to take care of - flowers might need to be cut, put in a vase, fed, their water changed every couple of days. Mourning is exhausting and they'd just go to waste. Bakery items sound like a nicer idea to me.
