What did you do with monetary gifts from DC's birthday?
DS got mostly cash for his first birthday, some clothes and the rest outdoor toys. Did you put the cash in savings? Spend some on toys? He's outgrown a lot of toys but we don't exactly have the extra money to use to buy him new. Is it wrong to use some of his birthday money to buy him some new indoor toys?

we put it all in savings, but he also got a lot of toys/clothes. I think it would be fine if you spent some of it on toys for him. If it were me though I'd bank at least 1/2 of the cash

i think that's fine. it's money he got so it should be spent on him. i'd use it for whatever he needs and put the rest away for college. (i think people give money because they don't know what to buy and trust you to spend it on your LO however you need to)

The checks I put in his money market and the cash I spent on a trip to target for diapers, clothes and some toys.

absolutely you can spend the money on some toys, isn't that why some people give gift cards, sometimes i give cash rather then a gift card so they aren't limited to one store
i put all the money in savings for them but you do what you want its your child and your choice, maybe try to put some into savings but definitely use some to buy toys

Thanks everyone! I think i will spend maybe $50 on new toys (if I even need to) and bank the rest. I forgot I have a few things that need returned from his bday and he got a TRU gift card. That should cover any new toys for him and I will probably be able to put all of the cash & checks in his account.

anything over $2,500 goes into their investment portfolio... anything under $2,499 goes into their savings.....
i cant see keeping that much money in his savings account because it earns so little interest...
i dont believe in 529s which is why we have stock portfolios for each child and whole life ins policies...

All but $50 goes into her savings. I let her pick out something (or a few things) she might have really wanted with the $50.
