I am. as soon as he is old enough, he is going to self defense classes. and after reading about that little boy "old enough" cannot come soon enough.

it was always such a common theme in my home, defending yourself. my father would "fight" so we wouldn't be afraid of a man his size (or at least not too afraid to fight back).

but I want it formalized. I want him in a dojo. I want his instructors to tell him about the "bad" people who offer candy. I want people other than his parents, people he thinks are cool, to tell him to SCREAM if someone even dares get to close to him.

I am terrified of things like this. my whole being needs to find whatever way I can to prevent it. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

My DD will most likely take Jeet Kun Do. My DH does it himself and loves it and wants DD to take the class when she is old enough. I think it would be good for her to know how to defend herself. My niece will be 6 in August and just started the class.

Yes. This was before this horror story on the news. We planned on some kindnof MMA/ karate more for discipline. But since we live in this twisted world, im thinking it will be good for all the sick freaks out there.Chat Icon

I honestly don't think self defense would have helped that Brooklyn boy. After reading that story, I feel like this was a family friend that he trusted to go to.

But absolutely, I have taken self defense and as soon as DS is interested he's doing some kind of martial art/self defense class.

Absolutely!

DH has a black belt in brazilian jiu jitsu, so of course he can't wait for Loey to get started! It's not exactly "self-defense" but you get the idea

Pretty much the same for me. It definitely can't hurt. My parents signed both me and my brother up for karate when we were younger. My father also taught us the basics on 'how to fight' (how to throw a punch, etc). I know it can't protect them from everything but whatever I can do to help them be that much more safer is worth it for me.

100% he and any other children will be in self defense the moment they are old enough to attend. To me it is like swimming. Everyone should know how to defend themselves.

Re: Self defense...will you put your child in?

i began tae kwon do as an adult and ever since i always said i would put my children in it.

i think as a child it was always drilled in my head to "play nice" and not to fight, punch, kick, or bite.

suddenly i was 24 and told to fight in a tkd class. it was initally awkward for me to spar ~ it seriously felt funny to punch someone. over time i got over it and sparring eventually became one of my favorite parts of class.

if nothing else i learned that i CAN get in someones face in necessary and on the flip side i learned to be much more controlled within myself. i dont necessarily think i would remember a kick & punch combination if attacked in the street but i do know that it doesnt matter size or sex (we would spar both men & women of all diff sizes, ages, heights) of your attacker you are never defenseless. i have thankfully never had to use a single thing i learned in class in the street and i hope to never have too. the empowerment that comes along with knowing YOUR abilities & limits is priceless and i want my children to have that.

my old school begins classes @ 3 ~ i plan on putting him in asap.

Definitely some type of karate/MMA/whatever, as soon as they are old enough. For self-defense, discipline, structure etc. I thnk it's very important and DH and I agree on this 100%.

Both DC have been in MMA since age 3. Until they get physically bigger, it's not going to help them defend against an adult, but I hope it will give them the confidence to deal with situations, which may be the confidence to run and tell someone what's happening.

YES!

My DD has already grown up in a dojo, my brother and DH are very big into MMA and Jiujitsu... and Carlie goes to class all the time with my DH... the Sempi's there always play and work with her... As soon as she turns 3 she will be enrolled! The children I see at this dojo are so respectful and such disciplined children, but also very strong and confident! I love it!

Re: Self defense...will you put your child in?

I am....

I am a 4th degree red belt in Tae Kwon Do (next belt is Black!-which I want to complete next year)....the program not only thought me to defend myself (kick some azz lol) but thought me confidence and reflex.......

DD will be 3 in November and I am planning on enrolling her in either Karate or Tae Kwon Do by next summer.....DH is against it but I am firm in my decision....
