Cake at a shower...
So I'm having a brunch for mine at the carriage house in babylon, and I asked about a cake and she said for the amount of people I have she can provide a cake for 75$ or I can provide my own with a 1$ a head slicing fee which is about 80$ either of its like an extra 80$ added on to the already very expensive cost. So...my question is...
Do I really NEED a cake?!

Re: Cake at a shower...
what about doing cupcakes??? They dont have to charge a cutting fee for that. I think you can get them for $1-$2 a piece at a bakery.

Re: Cake at a shower...
As a guest I usually dont even eat the cake at any shower. Im not a big cake fan and Im usually too full. IMO i dont think its necessary but some people might comment or think to themselves "i wonder why/am surprised they didnt have cake." Or for some people (like myself) I usually see the serving of cake as the signal that the shower is "over" and I can leave if I want to/need to. Will you have coffe/tea and other dessert?

HA! I too thought cupcakes and she said still 1$ a head bc its from the outside.
I don't ever eat the cake either I usually am too stuffed with all the food I don't want to, but I'm going tomorrow to pick the menu so I'll see but I figure with the brunch aspect they'll be getting danish, fruit, waffles etc who needs a cake (but again thats me)

Re: Cake at a shower...
To be honest, after all the other little desserts (cake balls, cup cakes, fruit, tarts) no one ate 1 slice of my 2 tier cake. I gave it to a family member whos sons birthday was coming up to use it for that. Otherwise, it would have been a waste.

In this case, seeing that there will already be dessert type options, I would forgo the expense of the cake. It does seem a little ridiculous that they would charge you a fee for even cupcakes. Maybe you could do cupcake favors, so the guests still get their 'cake' but the restaurant can't charge the fee.

That's totally ridiculous. I can't even believe they are serious with that.
I would reapproach the subject with them tomorrow when you are face to face and battle it out with them if it's necessary. If they won't work with you, I would tell them to forget it and you will handle it.
To answer your question, no I don't think you NEED a cake but I think you need some type of dessert.

Re: Cake at a shower...
My place mentioned the idea of a cake cutting fee and then just waived it for us, which was really nice of them.
I LOVED my cake. It was $125 for a two-tiered cake that fed 60 people and it tasted HEAVENLY. Everyone raved about the look and the taste. It really was so special. My SIL paid for it for me as part of her gift, which was nice.
This was our cake from Lady J's Cakes. FM me if you want her info:
ETA... great. Now I want cake. lol

Re: Cake at a shower...
What I loved most about my cake was the way it looked. I didn't get to eat any, but everyone LOVED it. I think you should get them to waive the fee, considering how much they are charging you to even have the shower there. Any way to negotiate that?
Just had to show you my cake...
Sugar Chic made the cake. Sorry, this post is about my entire shower. My son had no name at the time, I called him Sprout

Re: Cake at a shower...
No negotiating apparently the catch is to buy the sheet cake from the carriage house. This shower is really expensive and I'm helping somewhat with the cost which I don't mind, but btwn the favors, centerpeices and the overall cost it really adds up. I may just do dipped oreos as a favor myself and call it a day...dessert served! LOL

Re: Cake at a shower...
I am shocked they are charging even $1 for the cupcakes that is just wrong. They have to do nothing you can display them yourself.
What if you boxed cupcakes has your favor? So it is a dessert to go? Technically you didnt serve it at the shower.

That's why it's so absurd they want to charge you fees to hand out cupcakes or even just to slice a friggan cake. This is the kind of thing that gets me so worked up! It makes me so mad when they pull this crap. I feel like going with you tomorrow just so I can argue with them about it. LOL
I frequent the Carriage House so I know it is certainly not an inexpensive venue. Like I said, I would reapproach the subject and if they continue to say no to you I would start badgering with things like "Why are you trying to get me upset?" "Why are you so unreasonable?" "Why don't you want me to have cake?" "Are you implying I've gained too much weight during my pregnancy so I shouldn't have cake?" and then, if all else fails, pull out the big ones "Why do you hate pregnant ladies?" "Are you trying to make me cry?" "Does your (wife, mother, etc.) know you try to make pregnant customers cry?" "Do you realize you are creating an unstable environment for my baby in my womb because I'm so upset?" "Oh! Are you trying to say that I"M unreasonable because I'm pregnant?!" I see no shame in taking advantage of our "delicate" situation to benefit us, especially in light of this garbage. Even if it doesn't work, at least it makes them feel bad for a few seconds. LOL

Re: Cake at a shower...
I did not want a bakery cake. I had my mom bake her chocolate cake b/c it's my favorite, and a fond memory of my childhood.

THANK YOU!!! I thought the same thing cake cutting fee PSHT! Well went down there yesterday and said it would most likely just be the last time we use them, sad bc I have a christening to plan as well as 2 more showers and a rehearsal dinner. PLUS the room is a tad on the oddly set up side which scares me a little too. But thats another story.
I think I"m handing out either oreo's or rice krispy treats but again well see.

Re: Cake at a shower...
the only reason why I would think I would want to serve something is bc people usualy have coffee and dessert and I would be worried that they would "miss" it, lol. Can you put out your own dessert on each table and call it centerpieces? My friend did a tray of homemade cookies on a tray as her centerpiece and that was alos the dessert.
