I read somewhere that its actually good for SIDS prevention...so I will use it for a while if DS wants it. I plan to wean early though.

Agreed--I read this as well. Once LO reaches a certain age though, it will only be used at bedtime.

Our pediatrician told us this as well...

I gave her a pacifier and she only uses it when she wants it and most times once she is soothed she spits it out.

Re: Will you be using a pacifier?

hell yes!!! It was worth it with DS. One week of hell when he was 2 trying to get him off it, was SO worth 2 years of the comfort and peace it brought!

ETA: I was TOTALLY Ok with him using it at 2 - they are still SO little then. If people dont like it, dont go out with us.

DH calls it the off button. When they cry, stick it in their mouth and they stop! I DONT THINK SO! I do plan on using one but not for that reason. Maybe between feedings if he/she is getting fussy or in the car.

Yes we use one. The baby actually is very picky and knows when she does and doesn't want it. In fact, once she falls off to sleep she spits it out..kinda funny. When she doesn't want it, she shakes her head "no", even funnier!! Most times it works perfectly just as it is supposed to and pacifies her long enough to get her calmed down to move on!

My son was allowed to have it til a year. The I used it til 15 months just to calm him. Now he only gets it to sleep and it will disappear when he turns two.

I will used it with baby 2 if needed.

Re: Will you be using a pacifier?

never say never when it comes to the pacifier! DD just turned 2 and still uses hers for naps and nighttime. never during the day though. I started it in the beginning for the SIDS thing and because it definitely soothed her. I probably should have taken it away around 1 but she sleeps so well, I didnt want to mess with it. Now with the new baby coming, she tells us all the time, "I give baby my soothies" (we can the paci her soothie). I hope I can get rid of it either when the baby comes or more realistically in a few months. But in any case, I never regret giving it to her.

Re: Will you be using a pacifier?

I didn't plan on using it with DS as much as I did but when it was either he used me as a pacifier during witching hour just to soothe himself or a paci, I chose to give him the paci. Now at 19 months, we only give it to him during naps, bedtime or when he is having a complete meltdown. Sometimes he asks for it but I don't budge and distract him with something else. I'm waiting until he is 2 to stop. He may digress once his brother arrives so I figured 4 months would be enough for him to get used to DS2 before we stop him cold turkey with the paci.
