Will you be using a pacifier?

Just wondering what other moms and mom-to-be think about this.

I definitely don't want my son walking around with a pacifier... but was wondering if I should ever even start with one, what the progression should be - or if I'm foolish to think I even have a choice!

What are you going to do?

Re: Will you be using a pacifier?

I will use one if I "need" it.

I'm sure you can wean him off of it before he starts walking, if you want...

Re: Will you be using a pacifier?

I let DD have hers a little too long (my fault) and it scarred me deeply when I finally had to courage and strength to get rid of it. I still to this day cringe when I see toddlers walking around with binkys.

My plan is to probably use them in the beginning, but have them gone from 9mo-1yr at the latest. IMO, they don't need it after that.

Re: Will you be using a pacifier?

I really struggle with this whole thing. I know I'm probably going to need to for my own sanity. But I have 2 friends...one with a 2 year old and one with a 4 1/2 year old that still use it and honestly I'm embarassed to be seen with them in public. They look ridiculous! Both of my friends SWEAR they can't ween the kid but I think it's just b/c they are weak. Easy for me to say since I don't have a kid but I really don't want to be in their shoes. I'm hoping my kid just doesn't take to it so I don't have to deal with it.

Re: Will you be using a pacifier?

I didn't think I would use one with DS#1 but i did. Babies use them to help soothe themselves. It's actually not as bad as it seems. What's bad is letting it go on for long. DS actually wasn't a big fan of it until he started teething at 5 months. DS is 14 months and only uses it for sleeping. Within the next month or so I plan to start weaning him off of it for sleeping. Also I didn't offer it unless it was for soothing..meaning he just didn't have it in his mouth just because. Once he soothed himself it came out.

I read somewhere that its actually good for SIDS prevention...so I will use it for a while if DS wants it. I plan to wean early though.

Agreed--I read this as well. Once LO reaches a certain age though, it will only be used at bedtime.

Yes. If she takes it I will. I believe in the benefits of using a pacifier.

Re: Will you be using a pacifier?

I wish my DS would have used a damn pacifier. He would scream and scream as an infant and newborn. All he wanted was the boob. He never took to the binky and now at 16 months I am so grateful that he never did because I don't have to worry about getting him off of it. We will see what happens with his little sister. Every baby is different. I won't introduce it until BF is established though.

Based on DS, and trying now at 2 to get rid of the bink, I'm going to try to avoid it at every cost. My kid LOVES LOVES LOVES his bink.

i am going to use it, but like others said, do my best to not have them be 4 years old walking around with a pacifier in their mouth!

I don't see the big deal about using a pacifier. I plan to use one if it helps... I'd rather them use a pacifier than suck their thumb. You can't take away their thumb.

Can you say that you have to take it and keep it safe for the new baby? This is what my sister had to do when my niece was 3 and still using her paci.

Also, it's not just pacifiers that are a hard habit to break. I sucked my thumb till I was 6 or 7 and it's harder to get rid of a thumb Chat Icon

We will. Not right away when we're working on BF. DH didn't use one when he was little, I did, and we both had braces as teenagers, and that was pretty much our discussion on it.

I'm ALMOST positive there's a book called "The Pacifier Fairy." You may want to look into that too!

Yeah That's a good idea...I've also heard people using them like a "binky fairy" idea...that the fairy has to take them and give them to other babies, and put it under the pillow, and overnight replace it with a new, age appropriate toy/book, etc. That could work!

and I sucked my thumb til I was about 11 LOL so definitely harder to take the thumb away!! Chat Icon

yes. I hadn't planned on it, but if it helps me get a little bit of sleep, I will use it.

I thought my kids were addicts, but I was able to get them off cold turkey by 18 months.

Also agree that it's much easier to get rid of than the thumb.

Re: Will you be using a pacifier?

for me i was all for the pacifier - i was a finger sucker and my son looked like a thumb sucker according to a couple of docs - so i pushed the pacifier

he gave it up on his own around 9 months when he had a cold

it is much easier to take a pacifier awya over a finger or thumb

I will most likely give up the binky for my sanity and ween at an appropriate time.

I heard this too. Neither me nor my sister had any interest in them, so I'll see if DS does.
