BTDT: Hospital Classes help...advice needed
I am due in 9.5 weeks with our first child. After reading a bit on here, a lot of people go for classes. The two I am looking at are: 1) First Time Around Prepared Childbirth Course Super Class 2) Breast FeedingYour Baby Both are given at Good Samaritan where I will be delivering Questions: Has anyone taken these classes? Are they worth it? They are given this week. Is 31 weeks too early to take these classes? Would/did you bring your dh to the breast feeding one? Any other classes you would suggest either at Good Sam or elsewhere? Thank you!

I took a baby care class, Infant CPR & BFing. My DH has CPR training every year because of his job. Definitely bring him to the BFing class, it helps for him to have an understanding of it and I found DH got a lot out of it. I think it also helps him feel more involved and supportive if he has a greater understanding of it.

We did a similar class at Southside which include child care for an infant; being prepared for a CS & other stuff (it was a few week class)
We also did Lamaze/CS class at Southside
We did a breastfeeding class through Good Sam but the location was elsewhere. YES I'd make DH go as you "need" his support & for him to understand all it truly entails.
I don't think its too early at all.

Re: BTDT: Hospital Classes help...advice needed
I did the lamaze class at my ob's office but I think its the same lady that does it at Good Sam. Highly recommended.. she was great. If I got anything at all from it it was how to stay calm during delivery and she eased all my worrying questions I had. I also loved the hospital tour with a look at the l&d room so that I was prepared.. I also took the breastfeeding course with her too (not sure if she does that at good sam) at my OB's office.. again, answered all my questions and gave me insite on what to expect. My husband came to both of them and i'm glad he did. She basically pointed out to the husbands all the things they should be doing to help the wifes which lets say some men need direct instructions like that.. good luck

I did both classes at Good Sam
I left the breastfeeding class so overwhelmed and even more confused. I only ended up bf for 5 days b/c dd was slightly jaundice and they made me supplement with formula and then she wouldn't go back to the breast and I was not producing a lot so we just stopped anyway.
The other class was great. The lamaze part of it was really short but you got a hospital tour and even saw the OR which I ended up needing (emergency C section for preeclampsia) It was beneficial in my mind

Re: BTDT: Hospital Classes help...advice needed
Honestly, I think all the classes you really will need will be given at the hospital. I especially loved my 2nd lactation consultant... I used her A LOT. I had an epidural... so lamaze IMO was not really necessary. Pushing is like constipation bowel movement, which I have experience with...I know...TMI.
If there was ONE class I would take, it would be infant/child CPR. I'm CPR certified... have been for 7 years now. From choking to drowning... it can SAVE the life of your child before help arrives.

Re: BTDT: Hospital Classes help...advice needed
I took the infant care class at Good Sam and thought it was helpful. Def not a "lamaze class" like I thought though. Did a little bit of breathing but not much and it did not help me at all during labor lol. But the other stuff was good--the woman who gave it was knowledgeable and the tour was great. I did the all day class and we got out early.
I did not do the breastfeeding class but wish I did. I delivered on Christmas Eve and there were no lactation consultants there the entire time I was in the hospital and I got no help. Everyone kept saying to me, "Oh you didn't take the breastfeeding class??" I had flat nipples but had no clue until I tried BF. The nurses all said I would have figured it out during the class and could have gotten these things to draw them out during pregnancy. I ended up exclusively pumping but I think for my next child I will go to a class before. I had counted on just getting help in the hospital but that didn't quite work out!

We took BFing class at Huntington and it was definitely worth it. Most women brought their husbands and I brought mine as well. I figured if I were to forget anything he was a second set of ears to have listened.

Re: BTDT: Hospital Classes help...advice needed
I actually took the breastfeeding class while I was in the hospital. It gave me a reason to get out of bed!
If you have any trouble make sure you ask to see the lactation consultant. I wound up not being able to bf due to supply issues but it was helpful for the 2 weeks that I did bf.
I would also do the hospital tour. It helps to know what you need to do and where to go when the time comes. I took the C section class and that was such a waste of time!
