Judgment is impaired when people are under the influence and if they get behind the wheel, people can and do die.
This is the same with alcohol...
I'm pretty sure I knew that. I'm also pretty darn sure that I would not condone the use of alcohol, cigarettes or pot with my children and I refuse to rank them in order of evils. In one way or another they are all harmful and I do not wish my under age children to use any of it at all. I am not saying they won't but I sure as hell ain't going to say "Well gee they can all kill you so I'll pick the one for you that will take the longest amount of time to do its damage." And quite frankly, that is how I personally interpreted the question. Yes, I am strict and conservative and OLD SCHOOL. I'll tell them what I was told in HS:
"You drink and get caught, you lose driving privileges and you go to community college."
That was enough for me.
community college?? what does that have to do with anything?

that's what I was gathering myself... but I didn't want to assume that's what she meant. i don't want to go on thinking that she's saying community college is for all the "underage drinkers" (and possibly other people who do drugs) and whatever negative connotations she associates with that thought. because if that's the point, I find it to be VERY insulting, close minded and ignorant.
and in all honesty... there are college students in ALL colleges that drink and do drugs... and that's the cold hard truth. if someone doesn't believe it they are living in a naive bubble.

Re: Spinoff of Underage Drinking...
I am drinking since a very young age and parents knew. I NEVER got drunk or drunk/drive and I think it was because i was able to be very open with my family. For me drinking was not a rebllious act of something I was not suppose to do so maybe that its why I respect the limitations. I feel I am going to be the same with my kids. Regarding cigarretes they are not acceptable in my home I am not going to pay for my kids addiction period, if they want do it when they move out go ahead. Pot is also out of the question, I had never smoke pot so I dont see the point of it. Also I dont know if this is also consider a "controversial" thing to do in HS but I did not had sex when I was teenager (even though I was drinker ;) lol). BTW I went to Community college bc I had to work 2 jobs to be able to go to college not because I was drunk driving. I graduate college with great GPA and no student loans.

You are both wrong. I worked very hard to get into my top choice of colleges and I was told if I screwed up, I was staying home - that's all I meant. I was by no means implying that those who go to community college are inferior or those schools are inferior. I just wanted to go away to school. If I screwed up, I stayed home. Thats all. I should have indicated that.

They actually all don't kill you though. Again, you cant OD from pot. Driving while under the influence was not the topic being discussed.
No one said they wish their kid would do any of the three, but being realistic, kids experiment. And everyone that I know who experimented with pot, is fine now. Most who smoked cigs, still smoke. I thankfully quit cigs awhile ago, but it's not easy. It's a hard addiction and I wish I never smoked a cig in my life, and wish the same for my kids.
I just feel open and honest communication between parent and child is key.
We can agree to disagree.

Of course. High school and then college is a big time for people to experiment. I know most people on my college campus (not a community college) were smoking pot! I also know many people who went to Ivy league schools and they were smoking pot!

Re: Spinoff of Underage Drinking...
It seems as if my response was skipped over and ignored. I did not mean to indicate that community colleges were inferior. I am also not living in a bubble - kids are going to do whatever the hell they want when I am not there to see it but I can sure as hell give them stern warnings and inform them of the consequences of such behaviors the way I was.
FOR ME it came down to dollars and cents. If I got caught or into trouble as a result of doing something illegal (smoking would have been illegal for me as I was still 17 when I graduated HS), my parents would not have invested the tens of thousands of dollars it took to send me away to school. I was told that I would have to start my program of study at home at minimal cost until they felt they could trust me to make good decisions. Quite honestly, I would do the same especially if my children behaved that way with any sort of frequency. My parents worked very hard to be able to give us all they did and I did not wish to disappoint. I make no apologies other than the fact that I should have been more clear when I originally posted my statement.
I also would not be so stupid as to come on to a public message board as an active member with old and dear friends (and quite frankly the general population at large) and be knowingly insulting. You obviously don't know me well enough to know that that is not an element of my personality.

Knowing you from posting for a long time I know that was not your intention though it did sound that way and I can see how others would take that from it before the clarification.
That said the community college thing might not work. When I was a teen I begged my mom to let me go to Queensborough or Queens as to not have to leave my friends. She MADE ME go to my private college upstate (best thing she EVER did btw).

That's my point. Those who know me and my upbringing, would know my intent. My parents wouldn't have stood for any of it and all four of us kids went away to college. I was the youngest of four and I had been looking forward to that experience too so I did not take the chance of losing it. IMO, the best consequences for bad behaviors are taking privileges away. Going away to college was a privilege. Not stating that initially was my problem. The assumption that I thought others to be inferior could not have been way further from the truth and when someone attacks my character, you can be darn sure I won't stand for it. But people see what they want to see so my attempts at clarification were pretty much futile. Thank you for understanding.
ETA: I am sorry to the OP for the digression.

Glad that's not what you meant by it. It's just how it appeared.
I've seen you post here before... but I don't know you IRL and really even if I did know you, without clarification on what you meant you can't really fault anyone for taking as they did. Thank you for clarifying.

Re: Spinoff of Underage Drinking...
I will admit that I will be the hypocrite parent, just like mine were, that no matter what I did as a teen, I will tell my child they can't. I will not condone drinking, smoking or drug use for my child. ETA: the illegal aspect does matter to me. I've been to plenty of hs parties that were broken up by the police. I do not want my child to face the legal ramifications associated with pot or alcohol. I grew up in MD. The mayor of MD's daughter was recently drinking after an event at my alma mater hs. She was caught at a party by police and is in danger of having her college acceptance retracted.
