If you had an infant who was a chronic "spitter-upper"...

can you tell me how many months it lasted?

My DS will be 8 months this weekend and his spitting up is out of control--many time a day. His disposition is unaffected as is his appetite, weight gain, etc. He's always a happy little guy...even smiling while he's doing it!

But it's absolutely gross. And you never know when it's going to strike; it could be five minutes or two hours after eating/drinking.

Anyway, my doctor assured me it's totally normal but I didn't ask when I can expect this phase to end. Soon, I hope...

My ped told me once DD was walking it would be gone. He was right.

DD did it consistenly till she was about 9-10 months and then it gradually slowed down. She would still do it occasionally, but it wasn't like it was in the past with every bottle. Sometimes she would spit up 3-4 times per bottle when she was done, sometimes once or sometimes not at all. We just never knew. But like your DC, she was happy, gaining weight and not complaining. We just have lots of stains on our couch and carpet!

She's almost 16 months now and rarely, she will throw up a little bit, but it's not often at all.

Re: If you had an infant who was a chronic "spitter-upper"...

DD was a "happy spitter" too- much of what I remember about her infancy was the smell of regurgitated Alimentum. Chat Icon Didn't affect her happy attitude or weight gain. It disappeared around 10-11 months I think? All of a sudden I realized I wasn't putting bibs on her all of the time! Chat Icon

Actually- was donating all of our girl clothes since baby #3 will be a boy- I saved the "special memory" clothes and I found I couldn't part with her yucky stained bibs- that's what I remember her in for her first year! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Mine was a happy spitter too- and it lasted until over 8 months.
She was on a AR formula and she still did it- but a lot less.
The ped told me that once they are sitting up on their own more, they build core strength, which strenghtens the muscles in their esophogus and helps keep the liquid down.
But DD was sitting up from an early age and still doing it.
She is almost 1 now and she rarely spits up at all now.

My friends daughter was the worst spitter upper I had ever seen. When she started to eat more table foods, she got so much better. The more mobile she got helped too. She is a little over 2 and on occasion will still spit up with certain foods..

My son was exactly what you described. I think it ended by 10 months. The ped said it would taper once he was spending the majority of his day upright (sitting, walking etc)

I could have written that post myself. I would walk around holding him and hear splats - so gross :)

He basically slowed a ton by 9 mos and stopped by 10 or so.

Our ped called it happy spitter because he didn't cry after he spit up so he said that it wasn't an issue, that he just spit up a lot. He even got my mouth twice....so nasty! He stopped around 6 months.

Re: If you had an infant who was a chronic "spitter-upper"...

So funny you are ending the spit up. I have been thinking a lot about it as I get closer to delivery. DD spat up a lot. I hated itChat Icon

Think I might get lucky and NOT have a spitter upper?Chat Icon
