Had my weekly sono to check dilated kidneys
And sono doc is recommending induction next week since one kidney is still dilated
I had such a bad labor with DD that I was hoping for a nice natural experience.
Midwife appt on Thurs to discuss this.
Could use some hugs and good thought
Sorry, I am reposting. I had trouble the last time and editing didn't work.
Anyone with experience with kids with dilated kidneys, please give me some feedback!

Re: Had my weekly sono to check dilated kidneys
My nephew was born with one kidney and it was non functioning. He was in the hospital for the 1st 2 months and then on home dialisis. At 1 yr. he got a kidney transplant and is now a very happy and active 12 yr. old boy! I know it's not the same situation but wanted to share.
Sending you lots of prayers and hugs

Re: Had my weekly sono to check dilated kidneys
I just had DD last week. At 20 weeks, her kidney was dilated...I was sent to a specialist to monitor the kidneys...the left was always bigger than right, but both slightly dilated...at around 32 weeks, the specialist said both kidneys were within normal range so I didn't have to go back to him...at my 36 week growth sono, the tech said the left kidney was dilated again..it was 9.7, and they want it under 10. My reg ob spoke w/ the specialist and they decided there was no reason to deliver me early, and told me to follow-up with a ped once she was born...the ped ordered a sono of the kidneys in the hospital and both were within normal range.
From what i've been told, this is a fairly common thing that obs over react about...
They also swore DD was big...around 8lb 11oz, and she came out 7lb 1oz.
Try not to stress!
FYI, I was induced at 41 weeks, 1 day and it was terrible and I wound up w/ a c-section...Im not trying to freak you out, just make sure induction is necessary bc its not fun!

Re: Had my weekly sono to check dilated kidneys
It's slightly different... but my friend and her niece were both born with 4 kidneys. Not all working kidney's.
My friend ended up having some surgery when she was a kid (like 8 or so) but she still has all 4 kidney's.
Her niece had to have surgery when she was a few months old to have 1 or 2 of the kidney's removed.
Both are fine and healthy now. Esp the niece. My friend is very overweight and so she has some medical problems due to that.
Good Luck with everything.

Re: Had my weekly sono to check dilated kidneys
My mother has only 1 fully functioning kidney... the other one only works at 10%.
I don't know if it's the same thing... she always lets the docs know about it, but it never, thank God, became an issue. Docs don't seem to pay it much attention.

Re: Had my weekly sono to check dilated kidneys
I will pray that you have a successful induction and easy labor.
I don't have any advice but I received the same news about my baby girl today - one kidney is bigger than the other (I was not given the measurements). I'm very concerned that is might be an indicator for something more but my Dr. said that he's not overly concerned. He's only recommending monthly sonos and was very reassuring.
My DH's cousin's little boy had the same diagnosis at their 20 week sono and he's a perfect little boy with no kidney issues at all.
I have researched and researched this today, and while it is more common in boys, in most cases there is no further treatment needed when the baby is born.
for you and your DD.

Re: Had my weekly sono to check dilated kidneys
Everything will be OK I believe my brother had something similar at birth (21 years ago), but he's now a healthy guy with no issues at all.
You're team , right? I think I'm going to register a guess.

I agree... boys have a higher chance of this!
My DS had dilated kidneys throughout my entire pregnancy. They monitored me very closely towards the end (weekly sonos, NSTs), but my fluids were ok up until DS was born at 41 weeks. As soon as he was born, they did a sono on him to check him out and it turned out that his kidneys were perfect! My ped told me that he sees this a lot and 9x out of 10, the kidneys end up being fine.
GOOD LUCK!

Re: Had my weekly sono to check dilated kidneys
I had to go for monthyl sonos when i was pregnant with DD and her kidneys cleared up last minute, like 2 weeks before she was born, they were dilated forever until the end.

Re: Had my weekly sono to check dilated kidneys
Thanks for all the love. So far I was told that sono doc recommends induction but he said he can't force me to do it. I have already heard a lot of people say it all works out but I guess I am already nervous about how DD will take to the new baby and now I am stressed about having a baby who requires a lot of medical care.
Sigh... Hopefully it will be one of those stories where it all works out after birth.
