Moms who BF- anyone's child self wean?

DS #2 will be 1 on July 2nd. We just started to introduce whole milk to him. Since having a taste of it, he has zero interest in nursing! He is drinking it from a sippy like a champ. What did you do to relieve engorgement? I haven't been engorged in months and now I am. Please share your experiences with me. I thought I would be sad, as DS #1 went until he was 15 months old. However, I am ready for it to be over. I just am not sure how to go about ending it for good.

When I was weaning DS (he didn't self wean and I did it very slowly over a long time) II would drop a feeding at a time. I would drop one feeding for a week or two, then another, etc . When he was down to one nursing, I started doing it every other day. It was a little uncomfortable, but not too bad. Chat Icon

DS self weaned at 11 months. By then, he was having less and less interest and my supply was very low, so I didn't have any engorgement issues. I'm no help unfortunately Chat Icon

Re: Moms who BF- anyone's child self wean?

My DD did self wean at 3!!! but I was alredy pregnant with DS so couldn't tell you how it felt really as I was already feeling all the pregnancy symptoms.

I had to wean DS two weeks ago as I had surgery - again I dont really know what effects I felt fully as I was feeling pretty awful after the surgery so it all rolled into one. I will say though that 2 weeks later DS will still look to nurse and I have to distract him. I think some kids are WAY harder than others to wean so it sounds like your little guy might be an easy one to wean - good luckChat Icon

DS started to self wean around 10 months. But he did it gradually. At that time I finally stopped pumping and used up my freezer stash. I didn't have engorgement because he did it gradually. Right before his first birthday he actually got into position to BF and seemed to forget how to do it. I stopped BF when he was 1 year and 2 days.

I just finished weaning, and while I did it gradually for whatever reason I still had engorgement issues. I just pumped as little as possible so that I wasn't super uncomfortable and took advil for the pain. After a week I was totally fine. HTH!

Nina did at 8 months. I tried everything to continue but she weaned herself and I lost my supply.

Re: Moms who BF- anyone's child self wean?

DS self-weaned at 11.5 months. I wasn't ready either but I consider it a mixed blessing Chat Icon

For us, I had already started producing less and was struggling to keep up. I had already stopped pumping at work because he was wasting his bottles and barely drinking them at daycare Chat Icon My supply was already on the way out.

I was only really full once and it was a couple of days after he stopped. I decided to try putting him on the boob since I didn't mind if he wanted to continue. He nursed that once, the engorgement went away and he hasn't tried to nurse again since (he will be 12 months next week).

Same story here except it was 12 months to the day. I felt like the last month I was practically forcing him to nurse since he had no interest whatsoever!
