Help me - Bridesmaid dress & Pregnancy. . .

One of my bestest friends is getting married November 20, I will be yes just 15 days away from my due date but backing out is NOT an option as I would never miss being a part of her day (unless of course I'm giving birth!)

I have to order the dress and I keep putting it off. I can't get to bridal salon b/c the seamstress wants to me come in during the week, to see what they're going to do but I work in Port Washington and the bridal place is in Centereach. It's honestly just to much for me to go there during the week with work and having a toddler and besides the fact . . .I'm only 15 weeks, what can they tell me really.

This is the dress (I fear I will look like a stuffed sausage and I'm ok with that Chat Icon) but WWYD -
I usually order an 8 in bridesmaid dresses and usually still need a lot of alterations done to it but I always want to be safe then sorry. .. HOWEVER I'm going to be 37 weeks pregnant and have NO IDEA what size I'll be. Should I just order a 12 AND extra fabric??? Do you think that's safe or should I go bigger??

ETA- I cannot get a different style. they only have 4 dresses that come in maternity NONE of which come in that fabric OR color. I just don't want to be a pain. I don't mind looking like an idiot in the dress Chat Icon I just don't know what to do size wise.

this is how I looked the day I had Joey- right before we left for hospital

I look at it this way- it's a lot easier to make it smaller than larger right?
So order bigger and if it's too big at the time, taking it in should be easier than having to add extra fabric.

It's a beautiful dress, btw.

I would go up to a size higher than a 12 though- maybe go up another size or 2...just in case.
And then they can take it in if need be- so no, I wouldln't get the extra fabric.

Re: Help me - Bridesmaid dress & Pregnancy. . .

I think a 12 is cutting it close - I would go to a 14 or 16 maybe. They can always make it smaller but, can't make it bigger and, sometimes, the extra fabric won't work right to fix it as well as just taking it in.

It's hard - I know. I was in two weddings while pg. With my first I had no idea how big I was going to get. I was an 8 in the BM dress (with it being loose on me) when I was 8 wks pg. The wedding was at 24 wks and they told me to order THREE sizes bigger - not knowing what i would be like b/c I had never been pg before I listened. The dress was so huge ans out of proportion that it never looked right on me. But, at 38 wks pg it is a WHOLE different ball game! how do you usually carry? B/c remember - the belly will only be as big as the size and, I don't think a 38 wk belly would ever be a size 12. I would probably go to the 16 just to be safe even though I'm sure the other areas are going ot be huge and require a lot of alterations. Just to give you an idea - with my above ex. - the alterations cost me MORE than the dress! The seamstress said it was like she had to make a whole new dress! HTH!

ETA: Can you ask her if you can get a different style but, same fabric/color? SOmething strapless and empire waist would be alot easier to work with when you have to alter it down.

ugh, this is so hard. That's my problem, I'm scared a 16 is going to be so out of proportion, that's why I was thinking a 12 (14) with extra fabric.

& I kind of said it in so many ways but I don't think she got it and I just don't want to be difficult, kwim?

Re: Help me - Bridesmaid dress & Pregnancy. . .

I would order a much larger dress and the fabric. I'd also look into ordering a tall size. Looking at the photo, if the larger size gave you enough room for your belly, they'd only need to take in at the bust. If it didn't, they could add extra panels along those two front seems.

Then, depending on how form fitting it is around your belly, the extra length from a tall size would allow for the dress to be hemmed properly, without having to add fabric at the bottom.

one other thing to keep in mind though, looking at this dress (which is GORGEOUS, btw):

how high are you carrying or did you carry with Joey at that point? That might impede how they alter at the bust.

I added a picture, does that help?

Interesting about ordering tall, since I usually order short things lol

it does! Chat Icon

Looks like you dropped a good amount in that photo, so I guess the question is then...how would they alter it (or how would you want it altered)? Like, would you want the dress to drape over your belly or be form fitting around it so that the dress can still flow down below but be tight around the mid section?

I still think you'll need a larger size, but if you go for the form fitted look (which you probably would so this dress looks at least similar to the other BMs'), you'll def need the extra fabric to pop out the belly.

I agree that this dress is going to need a lot of alterations to get it to fit properly. I do think though, you may want to do a little research on the dress maker and see if they offer a maternity dress that you could get in the same fabric/color. perhaps if the top was the same with the straps (which would be great support wise) but with a different skirt. Maybe if you found out what your options were and then presented them to the bride, she'd give you a more definitive answer?

Is there any way you can get another dress by the same designer in a different pattern so it might be more flattering?

I'd like it to be form fitting (as frightening as I may look lol!!!)

yikes at 37w preggo! ... thats a gorgeous dress, but I can't see even a super model looking right in it at 38w prego

I really think you need a different cut, something that will let your tummy stick out

That dress is beautiful. You will look great in it too. I would think maybe get a 12/14. I would rather have it too big then too small.

Due to the cut of the dress, I'd go way bigger than a 12. You'd rather have extra room and they can take it in, then cut it close.
I was a BM in my brother's wedding at 16w. I measured for an 8 when I wasn't pregnant, but I asked them to order one size up because I hoped to be pregnant by their wedding. I really wasn't showing then, but my boobs definitely grew. I was glad I went a size up. But if I was further along, I'd probably have ordered a 14 or 16 and had them tailor it. The 12 wouldn't have accommodated the belly I eventually came to have.

ETA: Would your friend consider letting you get another Jim Helm dress in same color and fabric--maybe something with an empire waist?

Re: Help me - Bridesmaid dress & Pregnancy. . .

Ugggh, I have this problem too! My cousin's wedding is right at my due date, and I plan to be there unless I am physically pushing the baby out! I originally ordered a size 6 dress, then returned it once I got pregnant, and ordered a size 16. Which will def need to be altered, but I couldn't see going any smaller than that, just in case. I figured better to have too much material than not enough!
Good luck!!

Re: Help me - Bridesmaid dress & Pregnancy. . .

Is there a way you could order a maternity dress? That dress looks like it's going to be really challenging to alter to a preggo body. A friend of mine had a bridesmaid gown like that and wound up paying close to $700 for the dress b/c of all the alterations. Chat Icon

If that's not an option... order several sizes bigger than you'd normally wear.

A friend was preggo for another friends wedding, we both bridesmaids..she ordered a totally different dress with an empire waistline, but in the same color. She had to order a 14, and is usually a 6.

I have to be 100% honest. That dress is going to need so much alteration for you at 38 weeks preggo! If they can even do it! I would talk to best friend and maybe see if there is an alternate style you can wear. Something more flowy, or empire. Have you been yet? They may wind up saying they can't alter that style? That is what happened to above friend. It is a GOREGOUS dress, just very hard to picture 38 weeks preggo...you know?

Anyhow...if you can't get to Centereach, you can be measured anywhere, and call them, or you can just order your dress from any store. My sis-in-law lives in Huntington, and went there but the rest of my BM's got their dresses from Centereach. I don't think it makes a difference where you get the dress.

Can you go to a differe bridal store to either order from or just to get measured closer to you. I would go 14/16 b/c that dress looks like it cuts in a bit and for me they were never true to size

your already not going to blend in that well to the others bc your so preg.
why cant you get a diff dress?
i mean if your that good friends-she wont want you to be comfortable rather than blend.
i gained close to 70lbs being preg. at 15w preg i would have never have ordered the correct dress size.
maybe find out what the latest you can order the dress to just get your dress.
this is what i did when i ws a bm after giving birth. i ordered my dress about 2 months prior to the wedding.

Re: Help me - Bridesmaid dress & Pregnancy. . .

here is what I would do- put on the same sweatshirt you are wearing in the picture with Joey, stuff yourself with a pillow or something similar until you are about the same size as you were with Joey, then measure your waist. See what size that would make you and then I'd round up to the next size from there to be safe.
