Re: gestational diabetes

My friend has GD and I know she has to avoid all sweets made with sugar (she can have splenda products), strawberries, bananas, watermelon. She must have protein at every meal. She can have carbs, but they must be paired with a protein, and I'm assuming they should be whole grains. Dairy counts as a carb for her due to milk sugars. She eats nuts as a snack. Good luck, I'm dreading this step, which I should be doing soon.

I'm not allowed fake sugar products at all. no splenda, truvia etc.

no soda.. no diet soda etc. I'm NOT allowed to drink my sugar (that's like shooting it up). i drink only water really. But water, seltzer (flavored ones are OK but really only the vintage brands and poland spring sparkling water is allowed), coffee or tea (NO SUGAR in there whatsoever fake or real). So I really just stick with only water.

and I still have to have at least 2 dairy servings a day.

You also must have carbs with your meals.. but a limited amount of carbs.

basically my breakfast is scrambled egg with onion and tomato and cheese and low carb whole grain bread toasted with butter

snack is apple, cheese stick, carrots

lunch, whole wheat wrap with mayo, lettuce tomato, turkey and cheese and carroats

snack is fruit and a chobani yogurt (no diet yogurts and only greek yogurt)

dinner is a protein, veggies, and a carb

snack at night ANYTHING i want. Can be a muffin, cake, ice cream, etc. usually i have ice cream with an orange (the milk and orange together shoot calcium into your bones so they are a great combo). but no sugar free items as they usually contain some form of fake sugar.

my nutritionist is really really against any form of fake sugar. she tells me all the time that "fake sugar doesn't make healthy babies". She's even made me chant and repeat it with her. but I do hear other people who have GD and a diff nutritionist are allowed to have splenda etc.

the thing with GD is that some things work for one person but not another, so one person might be able to eat an item that another person can't eat. also certain foods might work later in the day but not early on in the day. it's like a puzzle.
