plus size

When I saw my obgyn prior to ttc I asked about my weight. He said make healthy choices, try to loose a pound a week but if you got pregnant tomorrow it would be ok. I tried to loose since on weight watchers but just went up and down 10 lbs, now I am pregnant 5-6 weeks and range from 193-198 at 5'2'' a size 16-18. Now I have my first apt next week and worried weight is an issue. I am hoping that being nauseous and the food aversions will help me loose in the 1st trimester so I can gain it back if needed in 2nd and then maybe 10 more with a max of me weighing 210 when giving birth. You think that is possible? I have heard plus size ladies tend to gain less because they are eating so healthy 'for the baby' and already 'have the fat they need.'

Any feedback or experiences with this?

Re: plus size

I think that everyone gains & loses at different rates. Dont go by what you have heard because that may not apply to you. The only thing i can say is losing weight first tri may or may not happen. I didnt have nausea at all I just had extreme exhaustion. So you cant bank on things. Plus nausea isnt exactly fun. I say just be smrt with the food choices & try to get in some excercise. Light brisk walks. And remember most weight you gain from baby you lose right away. Dont freak out just yet.

Re: plus size

I was plus size prior to getting PG and had concerns about my weight as well. Because I have diabetes I have had to follow a GD diet - only whole wheats, no sweets, iced teas, sodas, etc. Because of that I was only up 9 pounds at my 32 weeks appointment last week.

The most important thing is the health of you and the baby. Don't purposely try to lose weight and don't focus on it. Just make smart food choices and fit in some exercise if your doctor is ok with it. Eat when you're hungry - just make it a good food choice rather than sweets or bad carbs.

Re: plus size

When I first got pregnant I was 285lbs and i'm short 5'3 so i was very nervous about this, but my doctor said as long as I watched my weight, i would be fine, and that the baby would just grow into the weight i have.
I was so sick the first 22 weeks of my pregnancy with all day sickness that I lost 30lbs!
I have only gained back 10lbs of those 30lbs and so far my pressure and blood work are all fine and I don't even have GD. thank goodness!Chat Icon

Don't be too concerned, as long as watch what you eat and your pressure is fine, you should be okay!Chat Icon

Re: plus size

I think it's very much about how you treat yourself. My first pregnancy, I used the "why not, I'm pregnant" excuse and over indulged in not so great choices. I gained 60 pounds.

This time, having started higher than I was with DD, I promised myself I would not let that happen. I make an effort to make good choices, I am more active and I try to avoid excessive eating and/or sweets. At my last appointment (17w4d) I had gained nothing. My Dr. told me he thinks that I should gain between 0 and 10 pounds (and since I had an almost 9 pound baby last time, I'm very happy about that).

I think if you make the right choices, your body WILL use what it has for fat, etc. Chat Icon

My doctor said that both me and my baby will be fine. The baby is measuring perfect and I have only gained 3lbs and I am 26 weeks. My blood pressure is fine. I eat healthy and try to keep active.

I gained 30 lbs with ds and never lost it and I was overweight prior to having my first. I told darling husband that I need to lose weight before we have baby 3!!!

Re: plus size

I was plus size with DS #1 and plus size with this DS. I am definitely heavier than you even before both pregnancies Chat Icon . Everybody gains at different rates whether you're plus sized or not....so try not to be focused on how everyone else gained or is gaining. Also try not to worry how much you'll ultimately gain, to a certain extent you can't control it You can eat healthier for sure focusing on the health of the baby ultimately but not diet. Some o the weight gain will be the baby, fluid, the placenta and none of it you can control.

My doc recommended I gain no more than 20-30lbs since I am very overweight.

With DS #1 I lost and gained minimally my 1st and 2nd trimesters. My 3rd trimester I put on most of my weight. total I gained about 30lbs.

SO far with this pregnancy with DS #2 I gained 10lbs my 1st trimester and have stalled now in my 2nnd trimester, so already it's different from pregnancy #1.

Re: plus size

I was plus size when I got pregnant with DS. I was also trying to lose weight at the time when I got pregnant. When I got to about 7 weeks. I pretty much completely lost my appetite. I had to remind myself and force myself to eat. I never had morning sickness. I threw up maybe twice and only felt nauseous a few times. I lost a total of 16 lbs by the end of the 2nd trimester. At every Dr appt I asked the Dr about it because I never heard of anyone losing weight while pregnant. I was very worried about the baby getting all the nutrients he needed. My doc was never worried because even though "I" was losing weight the baby was growing at a normal pace. I then went on to gain 20lbs in the 3rd trimester. So on the day I gave birth I had only gained 4lbs total.

At my 6 weeks postpartum appt I ended up weighing about 20lbs less than I did when I got pregnant. I was so happy but that did not last long. DS was born in December. At the time I needed 3 more classes to finish my MBA. I went back to school for 2 classes at then end of January and then went back to work FT in February. DH was also working 2 jobs at the time. Needless to say DH & I were not cooking and ate fast food or order in food almost every other day. The days that we did cook, the meals where NOT healthy at all. By the time my birthday came around in July and DS was about 7 months old I had gained back the 20lbs plus some and I weighed about 6 lbs more than the day I gave birth to DS I was so ****** because I couldn't understand how I let my weight get that high. How could I weigh more than I did when I was 9 months pregnant?? I joined WW the next day and 2 yrs later I have lost about 30 lbs.

I forgot the point of my whole story but I just wanted to share my experience with you. AS of today, I am about 20 lbs lighter than I was when I got pregnant with DS, but I am still plus sized and I an determined to either stay at this weight or lose some more before TTC Baby #2 next summer.

Re: plus size

I am plus sized. I wear a 16-18 also. My Doctor didn't have an issue with my weight when I told him DH were TTC. He had no issue when I became pregnant. So far (18 weeks) I've gained 5 pounds and was told that's great.

Re: plus size

I was nervous too but my gyno said babies need a total of 255 calories a day to grow and she said most of us eat that extra to what we eat a day anyway.
I was also on WW and have been eating bland foods and not much of an appetite and lost 5 lbs Chat Icon My gyno said, which makes a lot of sense, whatever you put on, you'll have to meet at the end of the pregnancy so not to overdo it.
