Painting while pregnant....question

Dh and I bought a house and are redoing it. I've been doing a little bit of painting. The paint is latex, all the windows are open and provide good ventilation, and the paint has no smell. From what i've read it should be fine, but something dh said is making me second guess it. I'll ask my dr tomorrow but now i'm worried. Any knowledge on this?

Re: Painting while pregnant....question

I asked my dr. 2 weeks ago about this - he said he did not want me painting. I bought the low VOC Olympic paint from Lowes figuring that it would be okay. But he still said, he would prefer I didn't paint. I'm not sure I'll be able to NOT paint though - I don't trust DH enough to do it alone!

ETA: I'll be 31 weeks tomorrow.

Re: Painting while pregnant....question

We painted when I was in the 1st trimester. We used the Aurora paint from BM that has little or no VOCs (and no fumes), but my OB still said I shouldn't be in the same room as the painting.

Ugh I hope i didn't do any damage. I won't be painting anymore Chat Icon I can't imagine it being any worse than women sitting in a nail salon with those fumes though....I think i'm just trying to calm myself.

I would'nt, just to be safe. Maybe you can spend the night somewhere while the air clears.

Re: Painting while pregnant....question

We're actually not living in the house. I painted the bathroom...took about 45 minutes, then left the room. Other than that, i've just painted a little bit of trim. But it's weird, when you walk in the house you don't smell paint at all. In fact, somebody backed into the wet livingroom wall because they couldn't smell dh had just painted.

Re: Painting while pregnant....question

my doctor told me to stay away from all paint fumes, even if you don't smell it.
so unfortunetly i won't be involved in the painting with our new co-op unless I have the baby first.

I agree with you in that I dont see the difference between paint fumes, and the fumes at the nail salon, or the fumes from getting your hair highlighted...which my Dr said was ok after the 1st tri...dont stress...just mention it to your Dr when you go!

I hope you're right. From what I'm reading online, it says there is nothing bad associated with it, but they're really not sure. I just can't believe with as careful as i've been being, that I would make such a silly mistake and think painting is no big deal. I can't change what I did, but there will be no more painting for me!

Re: Painting while pregnant....question

This may be a naive question - but wouldn't it be ok to paint or be in a room that's being painted if you wear a mask and take frequent fresh air breaks? We are in the process of re-doing the house we bought and we are almost up to the point of painting the nursery. I am really hoping to get in there and set it up before DD arrives, but now I'm concerned with the paint fumes leftover.

Re: Painting while pregnant....question

I painted some during my first 2 pregnancies-a lot during my pregnancy with DS, low/no VOC.

I won't be painting this time around.

my dr's (a few in practice) all day to leave the house whenever there is painting going on. They also said to stay away from nail salons as much as possible too. Not saying I can't go - but to space them out.

Re: Painting while pregnant....question

My dr. said it was ok as long as it was latex, and good ventilation. I painted the first week that I got my BFP bc they said it was ok, and will prob be doing a little more with all windows open in a month or so...
