Baby Likes Tilting/Lowering Head to Side While Sleeping in Carseat? UPDATE, spoke to doc!

Sonya loves to slump her head over to one side when she sleeps in her carseat. She's almost 5 months, has great head/neck control and is rolling, etc. I hate how this looks (uncomfy to me!) and when I go to move her head, I feel her neck muscles fighting me to leave her alone! I was thinking about asking the doctor about this but wondering what you guys thought. The seat is totally in the right position; I've had it checked, so that's not the issue. Could it just be her wacky preference? She did this even as a newborn baby, when I used head positioners. I no longer use them because again, she does have total control (or 99.9% at this point) of her head. (update at bottom)

If she is constantly favoring one side, she could have torticollis. I would make an appt with your ped ASAP. If she does have it, the sooner it is caught and PT started, the better. My son has tort so feel free to FM if you have any questions.

Ah! I have never even heard of this. It ONLY happens in the carseat. Never in her crib/bouncer, etc...

Just read this: Congenital muscular torticollis is usually diagnosed within the first two months of a baby's life. Even if parents don't spot it, a pediatrician will.

This doesn't sound like what's going on...but now I'm sufficiently freaked.

Please don't freak. Weird that it's only in the carseat though. BTW, my ped did not notice it. Jordan's GI noticed it on a visit right around the three month mark and told us to make an appt with our ped.

are the straps high enough.. this happened to john when he slept in the car seat.. the straps were too low.. I raised them to the next level and he never did it again.

DD's head does this too - only when she's in the carseat, and only when she's sleeping. I always thought it was b/c she was sleeping - like how our heads slump to the side when we're sleeping in the car. If I'm sitting in the back with her, I just hold her head up. (I know, this doesn't really answer your question, sorry!)

I was thinking the same thing. My friend who is a chiropractor treated several of our friends' babies for the same thing. It all started with a similar question of favoring one side.

I spoke to the doctor and she eased my mind. She said that usually they see this in younger babies and that it would have to be happening 90% of the time. She's almost 5 months and this never happened prior. She also said that it's probably happening b/c either me or DH are hitting the gas/break too hard while she's sleeping and THEN she's moving her head fwd. I will keep my eye on it and speak to the doc in person next time I bring her in. Then she told me to stop Googling. LOL. Thanks for all the answers!! :) Oh--doc did say that she might just like doing this in the carseat but the danger is potentially blocking her airways. If I hear her snoring/wheezing to reposition her.

my kids always did that...I assumed it was just gravity at work! Chat Icon

If it bother's you, roll up a receiving blanket or wash cloth or towel and prop her head/neck up!

yeah AJ did the same and I assumed gravity too!

Actually we got those strap covers and they helped keep her head in place. they look like shoulder pads for seatbelts but they are for the carseat straps.

AJ does tilt her head. Just like Mama. I hope its not for the same reason and instead a learned trait. So far its just a quirk (hearing is 100% prefect).

But she and I tilt the same way! Chat Icon Head down to right shoulder. I even got video of her doing it! Chat Icon

Here is an interesting thought - could the angle of your car seat be wrong?

Try having the seat inspected to see if it is installed correctly. 90% of the seats I see are not.

I actually brought it to a firehouse for a seat check before I had her and it was fine. I appreciate you answering, though!

My baby does this and i just thought it was normal...I thought all little babies did this until they got a little older? Yes it always looks uncomfortable but thats what happens when she falls asleep?
