ETA: i had a vaginal birth, 4th degree tear, not a c-section.

It all depends on the situation. Mine (for the tear) were taken out. C-section, I believe dissolve since there are internal & external stitches.

I had an episitomy (sp) and they dissolved.

Typically they dissolve. I just went to my 6 week checkup and my doctor had to remove a couple that didn't dissolve.
I'm a major baby....so believe me when I say, you don't feel a thing.
