If your family is waaaaay more superstitious than you are ...

How did it affect your decisions?

My family doesn't "believe" in finding out gender.

My parents have said its our decision if we find out, but that doesn't mean we have to tell eeevvvvvvveryone.

They would prefer to wait until birth to find out what we are having.

I pointed out that once people look at the registries they'll figure it out IF we are having Chat Icon Chat Icon or Chat Icon Chat Icon

Mom has suggested that if we are having 2 of the same, we should put things on the registries of the other gender.

I said that I didn't see any reason to go through the energy of picking out things that I won't want anyone to buy us ... or having to return things if someone buys them.

So ... am I wrong to think I shouldn't have to keep a secret for someone else's superstitions/beliefs????

i don't think you should have to cater to other people's superstitions. If you want to find out gender and tell everyone than you should do that! Your mom already had her babies...she has to let you choose what you are comfortable doing when you are having yours!Chat Icon

i think you should do whatever you feel comfortable doing! everyone is always gonna have an opinion, but this is about you and the family you're creating with your DH. so do what suits you best. everyone else will get over it eventually. i dont think you should register for things that you dont want or need though. then you'll have to go through the trouble of returning everything!

I say -- it's your time -- do want YOU and your HUSBAND want. They'll get over it. When they had their children, they did what they wanted to do.

It never ceases to amaze me how other people feel like they have such a say in such important moments in other people's lives...

If you want to know, then I say find out and tell everyone!!! It makes things so much easier. I DEF would not register for things that I don't want/need...and if you are having Chat Icon Chat Icon they will figure that out too since there will be items of both genders on the regisrty...so I say just tell everyone!

I try to work with my parents and in laws as best I can. BUT finding out the sex of our baby was non negotiable to me. If either set had told us not to I would have done so anyway, I just could not wait Chat Icon Chat Icon

See, that's the thing.

They've accepted that we ARE going to find out.

They just think we should keep it to ourselves & do whatever necessary to keep it a secret. Chat Icon

Re: If your family is waaaaay more superstitious than you are ...

This situation is very similar to what my family is like. Well, my parents that is. They are both old-school and hate when people announce the gender before the baby is born. My mom tried to convince me to not find out which made me think "Gee, maybe she's right. Back in the day no one knew what they were having since there wasn't all this modern technology. Maybe I should wait it out and go all natural."

Well, DH was all for finding out but only for getting the room decorated. I tried to convince him to stay team green but he had a valid point. We are OOS with no family here. For the first month of our LOs life, we are going to have overnight visitors for a week at a time. A neutral nursery was out of the question as well since DH's idea included gender specific colors

So, we agreed IF we did find out, no one else will know. Not even strangers or co-workers. Because if we lived local, we would be team green all the way. So, for our registry we had all neutral items on it. My baby shower was a mix of pastel colors and it was nice. (Also, if we were to try for #2, I'd want to be able to reuse a lot of things if we happened to have the opposite sex second time around).

At my final sonogram last week we had the tech put the results in an envelope. That envelope sat on the kitchen counter for a week. Last night I made DH a special candle light dinner and we opened the envelope together.

Just because we know what we are having, doesn't mean everyone else has to know. And yeah, I admit, this is all because of my parents but I respect them too much and if this is their only request, then so be it.

So, we may not be true team green anymore... more like team "yellow".

Sorry this got so long... but I just wanted to share how things are working out for us.

IMO that is silly! Why should you not register for things and make returns a hassle for yourself, kwim?? Chat Icon

my FIL didnt want to find out the sex when my SIL was pregnant so she just didnt tell him the sex and he never looked at the registry anyway. Whenever we spoke about the baby around him, we didnt make it gender specific. If youre parents dont want to know, dont tell them and then they should tell their friends and family that they prefer not to know so nobody tells them.
