Where to start with a VA loan?
We're not yet in the market for a home (we're living with MIL), but have a timeline on when we want to buy.
We're very interested in getting a VA loan (DH is eligbile), but not sure where to start.
How do I get more info and go about pre-approval or whatever needs to be done.
DH is dragging his feet, b/c he feels like we don't need to do anything now (as we're not ready to buy). But I fear if we wait, it will just prolong our process. (I want to me IN A HOUSE BY Aug 2012- DS starts Kindergarten in Sept 2012 and we do not currently live in the district where we want him to go).
TIA!!!
ETA: We have been "working" with a REA (A long time friend) who has a mortgage person he works with, but neither one of them knows anything about VA loans

Re: Where to start with a VA loan?
There may be a website telling you what to do to get what you need. I have a VA loan but my mortgage guy did all the work for us www.homeloans.va.gov/
I found this site and you can apply for what you need. Good Luck

Re: Where to start with a VA loan?
I work often on deals with a guy who is affiliated with U.S. Mortgage Corp. (formerly Mortgage Concepts). They deal in VA loans. If you go to the website : www.usmortgage.com, and go under types of loans, you will see "loans for veterans," and it explains the process (veteran needs to get a "certificate of eligibility" among other things).
Sorry for not posting the link, but I have had hit or miss succes posting links here!
If you want my contact's name and information, let me know. He is a great guy! Very knowledgeable. He's based in the Levittown office.

Re: Where to start with a VA loan?
I have a VA loan.
You really just need to find a lender that deals with VA loans. It shouldnt be too hard. DH and I were preapproved at 4 different VA lenders before we decided on one.
I agree with your DH that you really dont need to start so soon. You pre-approval will only last a few months beofre it expires and you will need to be in contract by that time i believe.
We applied for our VA loan in October and closed in January. The whole process start to finish.

Re: Where to start with a VA loan?
You certainly need someone well-versed in VA loans..there is a lot of things that are different than a regular loan.
For one, no downpayment is needed, as I'm sure you are aware.
We have one and we went to Continental Home Loans.

Re: Where to start with a VA loan?
I will recommend gerard from Continental Home Loans. THey are awesome with VA loans and do everything for you as far as paperwork. We are in the midst of a VA loan and he is so quick, shoots back emails almost as soon as I send them, always willing to answer any and every question. They do everything right at Continental from underwriting to scheduling the va appraiser. I cannot say enough good things. If you want his number let me know. He will answer any and every question you need answered with out trying to shove you into a loan.

I second Continental Home Loans, they are great. I work with Pat Marabella. If you need more info let me know. You probably wouldn't want to get pre-approved just yet but you can find out about the process start getting all your documentation in order! Good luck!
