Bedding sets with bumpers?

If your bedding set came with a bumper, what did you do with it? Everything I read says no bumpers, so why do they even include them now in sets? Did you use it somewhere else in the room as decoration or just discard it?

Re: Bedding sets with bumpers?

I have heard of people making window valances out of them.

A lot of people still use them.

Re: Bedding sets with bumpers?

I am not using regular bumpers but breathable ones. In order to go "around" that problem and not waste money on a set where I am not going to use the bumpers or the comforter, I went with separates. Here is the link to some of the separates. I actually went with the second style. I love monkeys and call my babies "my little monkeys" Chat Icon

Re: Bedding sets with bumpers?

I purposely didn't get the "set" for that reason. We picked a bedding set we liked, and then just registered for the individual pieces we wanted and were planning to use.

I know this is going to get me my first nods for my "Mother of the Year" bid on here but I'm using a bumper. All of my friends do and there have been no issues. I'm not worried about it.

I'm right there with you. We'll be using the regular bumpers that came with our set.

I have been back and forth on this for sometime, and decided I am using bumpers. It's a personal decision, and its what you are comfortable with.

If I weren’t I would just register for separates. I know Pottery Barn and most other popular websites they sell things separate.

Re: Bedding sets with bumpers?

Thanks for all the suggestions. I would love to use the bumper but the baby books have put so much doubt in my mind. The bedding I really like for both boys and girls are cheaper in the sets than separately even without the bumper. My sister used bumpers, a sleep positioner and a crib with sides that lower and it wasn't all that long ago that she had her girls. Now they are all considered no-nos. How things change!

One book I was reading yesterday said foam matresses are the best and my DH said it was on the news yesterday at that they are dangerous. I feel like I'm going to fail this test miserably!

I would never use a regular bumper with the information that is out there now, its just not worth the risk to me, IMPO. For the record, a common misconception is that the baby will roll into them and suffocate and thats actually not the SIDS danger they pose at all. I used the breathable with DS, and plan on it with this one. I am probably going with separates this time around bc with DS #1, the set was such a waste. I virtually paid $200 for a sheet and crib skirt.

Re: Bedding sets with bumpers?

I registered for a breathable bumper and a set.

I plan on using the breathable bumper in the beginning and then switching to the bumper from the set.

My friend's DH is works for the ME's office and has done lots of SIDS work/research. He told me the best thing to do is get a really hard mattress. In fact, he said a piece of plywood would suffice. Chat Icon But, in all seriousness, that's what he recommended.

when i was picking out the mattress the guy said the foam ones were bad because they are too soft. And to get a harder one. Which I had heard as well... so that's what I did.

Re: Bedding sets with bumpers?

With DD, we got a bedding set. I put the bumpers in-they looked so pretty. I took them out her first night home-I just couldn't risk it based on what I read.

With DS, I just bought separates-not set. It was much cheaper and I bought the pieces I would actually use.

I will do the same for this one.

Re: Bedding sets with bumpers?

I used bumpers with DD from Day 1. Just took them out now at almost 16 months because she was trying to use them as escape devices. You have to do what feels best for you. Everyone will tell you differently. Chat Icon

Not using the bumpers. Love how they look but I would be too nervous. Our CPR nurse said absolutely not to use them.

Re: Bedding sets with bumpers?

mine are on the crib - everyone i know uses them and never heard about not using them until this website.

If i start to feel uncomfortable i will definately take them out. I also have the angelcare monitor for piece of mine and have a ceiling fan in the room

plus my bedding set was almost $400 so i would have never picked one so expensive if i wasnt using the bumpers.

ITA, it's not the risk of suffocation, they restrict air flow through the crib.

I'm not being fresh when I ask this.... but, babies don't get enough air since the crib doesn't have a roof or ceiling?

Well they say bumpers block the circulation of air but that's why I put a ceiling fan so air circulates
