Question about teachers on the Board of Education

How does everyone feel about members of your Board of Ed being teachers?
Right now our board has a few teachers(they work in other districts, not the one where they sit on the board) on it. We have 2 spots open that were voted on today and all but 2 of the people running also happen to be teachers.
While I think their knowledge of the education system would be helpful, I can't help but feel it is a conflict of interest in some way. What is your thought?

****I am hoping that we can have an adult conversation about this without people bashing teachers and without the teachers taking things waay too personally and getting defensive.

I think it is a good things.....I Actually think they may be able to save tax payers money because they have a better idea of what works and what does not ,there will be less waste.

*I am a teacher.

I also think it is silly for someone without fire experience to be a fire commissioner, and for someone without sanitation experience to be a sanitation commissioner , etc.., and for a magazine editor to become schools chancellor (had to get that in there sorry for Chat Icon )

I'll chime in!

I didn't understand the importance of having teachers involved in ed-policy decision making until I became a teacher. Now I've realized that teachers are an essential component to making sound educational policy.

To be honest, I find that most policy (in any area!!!) is created and debated by ill-informed, self-promoting indivuduals. Regardless of the field or subject matter.

I don't think you can go wrong with:

...teachers making decisions on educational policy
...doctors and medical professionals giving input on healthcare policy
....law enforcement and military informing security policy

If you're worried about bias of the teacher on the school board, I direct you to Congress and the plethora of companies, organizations, and special interest groups that help support their political campaigns....in the hopes of gaining their support and pushing their agendas!

Why not have someone with some educational background sitting on the board? I'd feel better off knowing that they actually have some concrete ideas regarding the improvement of the school system.

Ii think it should be a reflection of the community. We don't have any teachers on my board and i don't like that, b/c a lot of teachers (just in my work district) live in my district.

The majority of board members are lawyers then doctors.

I think there should be balance. All teachers would be a bad idea. But I see so much policy being made in NYC and the state that is unrealistic because so many people who make policy have never taught.

I agree with this.

There is nothing worse than the people making decisions having no practical experience. But to have ONLY teachers would also be a bad choice.

It seems pretty logical to me.

With that said though, I think it can be helpful for others with different backgrounds/experience also sitting on the board.

So yeah, count my vote towards a balanced board.

ITA with this too. I wouldn't think it's a conflict of interested b/c they have your child's best interest in mind while at the same time have experience as well as inside scoop with classroom.
