Has anyone ever cut back a nanny's hours?
If so, how did it go over? Obviously it's less pay (in this case 20% less) so I can't imagine it would go over well.... How long of a notification/transition period did you have before you made the change? Did you assist your nanny in trying to find a job to supplement that income and if so, how and were you successful?

I would give her two weeks notice if not a month if possible.
I wouldn't be surprised if she left to have 1 FT spot over having to carry 2 spots

I'm actually thinking 2 months. I absolutely wouldn't blame her if she found another FT spot and but I'd like to try to show her we want her to stay too....

I did when I was on maternity leave and she was actually happy about it.
She went from 10 hrs to 8. She really wasn't happy working so many hours anyway.
Now that I am back at work, she is back to 10.5-11 hrs/day and I can tell she isn't thrilled.
So, point being, you never know, maybe she will be ok with the cut, so long as you give her 2 weeks notice.
Also, would you consider using her possibly for weekend babysitting (like Sat nights or something) to supplement her income?
I doubt she will leave a comfortable, stable job if it is not a huge decrease. Although I would be prepared for her to ask you for a slight increase in wage to get her somewhere closer to what she is making now.
ETA: how much are you cutting? would it be less than full time (40 hrs?)

It would be 40 hrs but one less day a week instead of less hours a day. She'd actually still be receiving more money than I see most people in LI pay for 5 days because she's starting out very high (based on what I read on here at least). I had said I was looking to do this a year ago so it's not without any warning but I know she will be stressed about the pay reduction. I was thinking of mentioning the weekend babysitting because I think that will help a little. I was also thinking maybe I'll ask around to see if anyone needs someone one day a week.

Not sure where you are located but I am looking for someone one day a week come september?

Honestly, you pay her well. I would use her for an occasional weekend night if she wants it but just lay it out for her. I agree that she may welcome the decrease in days.
