people are so weird - long vent

My aunt (thru marriage) called and emailed my mom a few weeks ago with links to bookcases that she wanted to get for me. Well she wanted to get me 1 but she wanted my mom's opinion.

My mom said she would look through them and showed them to me and I said I reallyyyyy don't want any.. because we are having twins, in 1 room and with 2 cribs and 2 dressers and a glider there is literally NO room left.. we actually have to push the crib a little to get into the closet.

My mom calls and says that she doesn't think I want any.. and proceeds to tell my aunt why.. (BTW we are moving back in with my parents b/c we have a 1br co-op and my parents have a large house just for the 2 of them).

So my aunt goes on and on that we are going to need a book case and my mom keeps insisting there is no room.. so my aunt says well then we should put the book case in our bedroom or my parents can put it in their living room... (meanwhile my mom has given away and sold items to make room for us). My mom keeps saying no no no .. nice thought but no thank you.. she even tells my aunt to speak to me about it.

A few days later I'm speaking to my aunt , she never brings it up but I casually mention the furniture and how there is no more room and we have so much stuff to move blah blah blah.. today she calls my mom and tells her she bought the bookcase and already assembled it so we can display it at my shower for whoever buys me books.. this bookcase was over $200.. why would u spend your $ on something that you were told we didn't want/need and spend so much on it?! We obviously can't return it b/c it's assembled and she's going to expect to see it when she comes over.. and it totally doesn't even match the white furniture..

I know I should be thankful.. but I'm actually annoyed!!!!

Is your aunt one of those "showy" types? Like she wants to show it off to people at the shower to be able to say "I bought that!"

Her actions seem to lean in that direction to me. That seems so weird that she would purchase such an item, particularly furniture, after being told by 2 people that you can't use it right now.

I'd be annoyed too and probably would let her know that it's appreciated, but chances are there won't be any space for it even if she bought & assembled it. It's almost like her buying it a big "F U--I'm gonna buy what I WANT to buy no matter what" and that would p*ss me off!

Tell her you have no room and SHE can display it in her home for when you (never) visit.

Ughhhhhhhhhh that's exactly what I felt like.. she always says she's against registries b/c she thinks people should be thankful for what they get.. and I totally get that.. but WHYYYY would you buy something that someone DOESN'T want.. when you know that they don't want it?!?!?

ugh that would annoy me too. my MIL does stuff like that. like she'll ask if we need anything and we say no, and she says "well i'll still keep an eye out". and then we end up with things we didnt want and we dont even like. she cant' accept no for an answer

That's not cool and if she tries to make you feel guilty about it, ignore her. She bought it because it was what SHE wanted to do. It doesn't seem she took you into consideration at all. That's sucks!

Thanks ladies.. I was feeling kinda guilty for not really being appreciative.. but I think it's such a bizarre situation!!!!! You guys definitely made me feel better!

to buy someone a pc of furniture is a nice gesture but very hard to do without having the right info.
In this case ur aunt is just being obnoxious by not respecting ur wishes and explanation of not having enough room.
Sorry u have to deal with it now...

I'm all for being appreciative, but this is nutty. I would tell her, thanks and then put it for sale on Craig's list.
