Midwives in Nassau
Has anyone used a midwife in Western Nassau that they would highly recommend? I am looking for a very mom-friendly environment- meaning no pain meds, no pitocin, no episiotomies, only intermittent fetal monitoring, walking and eating/drinking allowed. Thanks for any input!

Re: Midwives in Nassau
I'm using Melanie Sumersille. She's part of Garden City OBGYN on Stewart Avenue. This is my first pg so I can't say how delivery will go but so far she's been great. She's easy to talk to and very informative. We plan to have a delivery as you described. She said that's the best way to use her. In other words, she said that if I want an epidural, to go with an OB. She said I could walk around during labor and that she makes every effort to not do an episiotomy or use pitocin. She delivers at Winthrop.
Everything I've read about her online has been good stuff. And the women in her office rave about her. The ultrasound tech in her office, for example, delivered 3 babies with her.
I've also heard about Jeanette Breen, she only does home births and I've heard great things about Barbara Charles, she delivers at Nassau University Medical Center.
Good luck!

I agree. Although I do not see her I see one of the OB's in the pratice. I originally wanted to go to a midwife but DH was uncofomfortable with it I had researched Melanie and found only good reviews. That is why I decided on the other Dr. in the practice. Even though he is not a midwife he is still very pro vag. delivery and what the woman wants.

What hospital does Melanie deliver at? Never mind I just saw she delivers at Winthrop.
Has anyone on here actually delivered with her? I would love to hear your experience -- I'm always looking for good pro-normal birth caregivers.

I did! FM me with specific questions. DD's birth did NOT go as planned (see my birth story) but overall I was very happy with her. I plan to use her for #2 also.

Re: Midwives in Nassau
Just got off the phone with a colleague of DH's. She used Dale Cook (Gaia Midwives) and delivered twice in Nassau University Medical Center. She had water births for her two boys who were ... wait for it... 11 pound+ babies!

I am seeing Melanie too, and I feel the same way- all the appts are super rushed- and not only that, but she is so frenetic! If she is like that during appts, I just wonder what she is like during labor??
Would love to hear from others who delivered with her!
