Re: when to tell my principal?
ask your dr about the 5th disease. because I think it goes around often and if that means your going to be out every time, you might be out a lot.
I think (again check with your dr) you only need to be out if its in your class or a student in your class comes in contact with that student then you
its one of those scary things! I don't plan to tell my boss until 12-15 weeks Assuming I'm not showing too much more

Re: when to tell my principal?
I made sure to tell the school nurse as soon as I was pregnant. She has kept me up to date on what is going through the school and what I should or shouldn't be doing. also, on what past practice has been with other teachers.

Re: when to tell my principal?
call your dr and tell him its going around in your school. it was going around my school, so I called my dr and went in for blood work. it turned out i was immune bc at some point I was exposed to it.

Re: when to tell my principal?
I don't work in a school but I do provide early intervention services to children. I told my my director when I was 7 1/2 weeks b/c I couldn't carry heavy things. I think if you feel you need to tell your prinicipal/nurse, then you should. It definitely made things a bit easier for me and I complete tust that she kept it quiet.

Re: when to tell my principal?
I told mine around 8 weeks for this exact reason. One teacher had shingles and I wanted to be in the loop.
Also, from my blood work my doctor was able to tell that I was immune to 5ths.

Re: when to tell my principal?
I went to my regular gyno- who doesn't deliver babies- on Tuesday. He recommended me to another practice and made an appointment and they said the best day they can give me is wednesday. Maybe I will call my gyno and ask if he can do a blood test.
The nurse at my school isn't the nicest woman... so I am not sure if I feel comfortable telling her. But maybe its in my best interest.
Thanks for all the advice!!

Exactly, tell you nurse now. She will watch out for you and give you a heads up with anything going around.
I told my principal at almost 13 weeks. Then I told my class at 21 weeks, my principal made me wait as long as possible. I am in elementary school too.
Good luck!

Re: when to tell my principal?
I told my school nurse right away. They are supposed to be confidential, I would hope. i waited to tell my principal until 12 weeks this time, only b/c i needed to take the afternoon off before a vacation for a test.
Fifths disease has gone around multiple times for all my pregnancies. But if you have been teaching for a while, my OB said you've already been exposed and it's probably not a problem. (I even have some strange parvo numbers - it shows that I have had it recently, but not long term - with each kid - so years in between - so if it was short term, it should turn to long term)
i don't think that they have people stay home anymore. Once the symptoms are present, it's not in it's contagious stage.

Re: when to tell my principal?
I told my principal at 8 weeks, rest of staff at 12. I wanted to tell earlier, but I was so sick and had taken off 3 days for appts, and I never take off. She said she knew already, well she guessed, b/c of the absences. She has been nothing but supportive.
