Re: Dumb Q - Can you have chickens in your backyard in Nassau?
It's not a county code, it's a town code. I believe town of oyster bay and Hempstead both allow 3 hens BUT they have restrictions on the location of the coop in relation to the property lines and distance to neighbors homes that make in impossible in some areas to have them. Some towns have their codes listed on their website. Incorporated village rules probably would not allow chickens. Only areas zoned for agriculture allow roosters on LI. I have only hens now and I started with only hens as my town code states but I did have roosters for a short while when Sunny hatched out boys. My neighbors were all ok with it but when they matured enough to crow at 4:30 am and 9 am and 1:00 and 4:00 I decided it wasn't fair to keep them. I just had a neighbor tell me the other day she misses hearing them LOL. Hens do make noise too, they "sing" when they lay an egg, my girls call me when they want something and they see me in the house, they chat with each other sometimes and get a little loud. So even hens are not silent, but it's in no way as obnoxious as a crowing rooster.

The neighbors diagonaly behind us have an ABNOXIOUS exotic bird they leave outside in the Summer. It's like being in the Bronx zoo.
I would only have 2-3 hens. NO rooster!
I am in the Town of Oyster Bay. I am not in a village. I guess I will try to call my town too.
I know what you mean by "singing".
Thanks!

Peiple in my neighborhood have pigs chickens rabitts and ducks -- its a regular "farm" on a 60 x 100 corner lot in East meadow
