Re: whats the deal w unpasturized cheese

Unpasteurized cheese is a listeria risk:

Here's some info from CSPI regarding pregnancy & cold cuts:

The risk: Listeria (Listeriosis)

Where it’s found: soft cheeses, unpasteurized milk products, deli meats, smoked seafood

Why it matters: Listeriosis causes flu-like symptoms. It can be passed to an unborn child, resulting in miscarriage, premature birth, or birth defects. Listeriosis is treated with antibiotics.

How to avoid it: Do not eat unpasteurized, soft cheeses (such as Mexican-style, brie, and Feta). Re-heat deli meats to steaming. Avoid smoked seafood (such as lox). Do not drink “raw,” unpasteurized milk.

Q: Isn’t listeriosis rare?

A: In the U.S., an estimated 2,500 persons become seriously ill with listeriosis each year. Of these, 500 die. Pregnant women are about 20 times more likely to contract Listeriosis than other healthy adults, due in part to immune systems that weaken during pregnancy. An estimated 1/3 of all listeriosis cases occur in pregnant women. Rates of listeriosis may be underreported, because symptoms can take up to two months to appear. In addition, miscarriages and premature births that may be caused by listeriosis may never be conclusively linked to this illness.

Q: Is it safe to eat deli meats if I buy them from a reputable source?

A: Unlike many bacteria, Listeria can live in refrigerated conditions, and on metal and plastic (such as meat slicers and food packaging). Unless food contact surfaces are adequately cleaned and sanitized between each contact with food items, they can easily become re-contaminated with the bacteria. Even a reputable grocer or butcher may have difficulty completely eliminating Listeria from food contact surfaces. You should always re-heat deli meats to steaming before eating.

Re: whats the deal w unpasturized cheese

I'm shocked that it wasn't!! Did you speak to a manager or just a random person working there?

I'd call your doctor and see what he/she says.

I'm shocked that it wasn't pasturized, its pretty hard to find it not.

And don't freak out because it would have to have listeria, it doesn't mean it does. it just has a greater chance of having it.

I'm sure you are going to be fine.

I have a feeling the person at the place was wrong

Also- wasn't that warm? if so you really don't have anything to worry about.

I ate cold cuts yesterday and I heated them up. they have the same risk

Re: whats the deal w unpasturized cheese

it's fine because it was heated.

i'm not surprised it was not pasteurized - most of the "authentic" italian places will make their own mozz on premises - it's actually not that difficult to make!

I wrote this on another thread about Listeria. Hope it gives you peace of mind Chat Icon

I know Listeria> is a big fear on LIF, but it is very rare. 2,500 people in the US contract Listeria each year. Total. Out of the population of America! Out of that 2500 people about 833 of the people who contract Listeria> are pregnant.

This is such a small number that the percentage of people who contract Listeria is .001%!!!!!

In Europe, where there aren't these crazy restrictions on what pregnant women eat the numbers are even less, and Listeria is under the "rarer disease" category.

I am sure you are fine

this, you're fine! And the fact that it was probably fresher than the normal fresh pasturized mozerella you'd buy from a non authentic place!!

ITA agree...my OB told me driving to the restaurant/deli was a million times more dangerous than having any cold cuts/unpasteurized cheese.

I totally posted and ran before but if it was heated, you are fine!! I bet since it was a "real" italian place, it's totally why. That's why I ask about feta when I go into a "real" greek restaurant (& i'm not usually a food worrier)

But i guess when i go to Dr. next Tues. ill tell them. If i dont get sick first. I would assume if you have some type of bacteria you would get sick or something right away.
