how do you nicely tell people? re: names

With my dd I made the mistake of sharing names and our family and friends drove me nuts and actually made me cry a few times with their nasty rude comments about name choices. Even when we said we were set between 2 just waiting for her to come they kept giving us new names and said they would fit her much better then the ones we have... I'm 14.5 weeks and they are at it already. We are not keeping the gender a secret but I would like to keep the name a surprise and not even discuss names since I was so upset lastime and it started getting really annoying. I already made 1 comment how we are pretty set on a boys name and this one person keeps giving me more options and I said were pretty set and she said well im just helping. Chat Icon
So my question is when people ask about names what's a nice way to say were not sharing the name because we want it to be a surprise which is the truth

Re: how do you nicely tell people? re: names

we are just saying we've narrowed it down to a few names and we are waiting until we meet her to decide...its a little white lie but its a common thing to do so people understand and dont question it

Re: how do you nicely tell people? re: names

You just have to say it and that's it.

You have to NOT care about what people's reaction will be when you tell them the truth.

People ask us all the time what our possible names are for our Chat Icon , and I have no problem saying "I don't really have any and if we did, we aren't sharing with everyone until the baby is born."

When I get the "why not?" I straight out say, "Because everyone has an opinion and seems to come down with foot & mouth disease when it comes to names. I do not need to hear about how a name we like is the same name of your mom's friend's cousin's mailman's son, who turned out to be a serial rapist. So when the baby is born, you'll find out with the rest of the world."

If they give you attitude, oh freaking well.

Re: how do you nicely tell people? re: names

Im in the same boat. After my experience with DD, I WILL NOT tell anyone the name before hand.

So I just tell them we are still deciding and not sure yet...even though we have the name set..and I entertain all their suggestions...as far as they know! Chat Icon

Re: how do you nicely tell people? re: names

We were team green with DS and when someone asked we just flat out said we're not 100% decided and we don't want to share the names
no one really had any issues with it
This time I guess more pple remember we never said anything so I really haven't been asked too much Chat Icon

we're keeping the name a secret too and we just tell them we have the name and we're keeping it a surprise until she's born. so far people have respected that.

We just told everyone that we weren't sharing. I wasn't really too worried about DS's name, but DD has a more unusual name, and I didn't want to hear the comments. Just say you're keeping it a secret until the baby arrives. End of story Chat Icon

Re: how do you nicely tell people? re: names

This has happened to me al ot this, because we just "came out" on FaceBook. My answer is we have chosen not to share the names of the babies. All have understood and only a few have given the pouty lip.
I can't get over how many people act like you are doing them a dis-service not finding out the gender.

You just have to say it and that's it.

You have to NOT care about what people's reaction will be when you tell them the truth.

To add: THEY dont care how YOU feel when they butt in on business thats not theirs.

THEY dont care how they make YOU feel.

THEY dont care about YOUR reaction.

Tell them the truth. If THEIR feelings are hurt so be it. To the one woman, I would say "I know your trying to help, but its not. Please dont give me suggestions on names anymore."

i made that mistake by telling a few of my close gfs. and even my mom. Ugh. So we're not telling anyone else until LO is here. I just keep telling everyone that we haven't decided yet.

Chat Icon this is probably what I would say.

Whatever you say I'd make it clear that not only are you not telling, you aren't discussing, because otherwise people will still offer you suggestions and things to stay away from. Just say DH and I have decided we want to keep this decision private and between the two of us, so we aren't discussing names at all with anyone.

Re: how do you nicely tell people? re: names

Umm I would just say we haven't picked a name and are waiting until we know the sex or meet the LO.

OR I would be honest... and say we aren't sharing the name we pick until the baby is born. And even tell them about the last time. Sometimes I find that blunt honesty gets people to back off and understand.

When people would ask if I was pregnant or trying, etc. I'd tell them about my mc and all... and they NEVER bothered me with those questions again!! I know it's different topics... but it's an example of just being bluntly honest and not rude.. but getting the point across.

Sometimes if you say "oh we don't know yet" or anything along those lines... they will keep harping. If you want to nip it in the bud then just say the truth.

I've been telling people we have it narrowed down, but haven't made any decisions yet, and we might not until the baby is born, so we'd like to keep it a surprise.

Re: how do you nicely tell people? re: names

We never shared DD's name and dont plan on sharing this baby's name either beforehand. I tell people that we are keeping it a surprise when they ask and nobody has ever really pushed the issue.
Sometimes I get bored of saying that so I say we havent picked anything yet or something along those lines.

Last time I was pregnant, I shared some names we had in mind with a relative. She says, "Well, I hope you have a girl because I don't like the boy's name".
