Baby in the room with you at the hospital?

Baby in the room with you at the hospital?

I was just reading a birth story from a woman who recently delivered at Winthrop. She mentioned how pro the nurses on the maternity ward were about keeping the baby in the room with her. I also just spoke with a friend who mentioned the same thing to me about Winthrop.

Is this a new thing? When I delivered my son there in 2009, it was not an option to me. All the mommies dropped the babies off at a certain time of the night.

Just curious if I am misinterpreting what they told me, or if others have heard the same?

NSUH is very pro also.. my mil works there and says how they really want moms to keep the babies in the rooms at all times.. i told her this is not realistic.

Umm, not to be a jerk but in my head, of course the nurses would want you to keep the baby....less work for them throughout the night! Kinda like how I love when students are absent, it's just nicer when there are less. Chat Icon

I get that could be the thinking behind it, but I am just surprised by that. It won't work for me - anesthesia makes me ill for a good 36 hours after my c section. There are no drugs that help it, it's genetic.

Having the baby in my room over night is not an option. My husband needs to go home to our son, so no sleepovers for him. I cannot keep up with a newborn while holding a pillow with one hand over my incision and a puke bucket with the other. I guess I just expect the nurses to be readily available for my baby's needs. Not pushing me to be mother of the year on day 1.

Really?
I just delivered there for the 2nd time last week and the nurses never said anything about bringing the baby back to the nursery. I actually had a few of my nurses come in at night and ask me if I wanted them to take the baby back for me! lol

im delivering there and their website says they offer 24-hour rooming-In, if a private room is available or in a semi-private room with your roommate's approval. but i think they take the baby out at 11pm if you want to sleep during the night.

I delivered DD1 at NSUH in Dec of 2008 and they gave us the choice, they weren't for or against it, I chose to have her in there with me!

interesting. However, the "roommate approval" makes me chuckle. In 2009, I was not asked my permission for my roommate to have her husband and new baby share the room with us Chat Icon

The nurse explained he had to leave, to which they both just said no. He stayed the night and was a real pita.

I got into a private room the next day Chat Icon

Re: Baby in the room with you at the hospital?

We just went on a tour at Stony Brook Hospital. The reason for the baby in the room the entire night is so that you can start picking up on the babies cues for feeding, etc etc., and so it's not so overwhelming when you then go home and have no one taking care of the baby overnight. It makes sense to me.

Stony Brook actually is going to make this manditory very soon from what the nurse said.

Hi! So I just delivered there and it is a new-ish policy. I should say although they are pro they are accommodating. My second night I was in a ton of pain and hadn't slept in 48 hours. I needed to get some sleep or I was going to be a mess going home. I nursed her at 10:45 they came and got her and gave me motrin and ambien. I picked her up at 4:45 (when I woke up). They said it's better if she's with me for all the right reasons, but I knew that it was a smarter choice for us to get a little rest. I think that in your situation I'd also have them keep her. I would not have been able to do it without my husband there, it would have been to hard to even lift her out of the bassinet alone.

Why isn't it realistic? Not trying to be snarky at all, but I'm no superwoman and had both my DS's (separate pregnancies) in the room with me 24/7. Only time they left was when they were getting checked by the peds for morning rounds. Not saying it's bad if you put your babies in the nursery at times at all, but it's totally doable to keep them in with you. Chat Icon

I delivered at North Shore Plainview and I was able to keep the baby all day and if i wanted him to brought in during the night for feedings I could have that but they did take him at a certain point.

I delivered at winthrop in Nov 2009. I didn't experience this at all. During the day I had DS with me for the majority of the day. At night after I bf, I would have them take DS so I could sleep. They would bring him in every 3 hrs like clock work for feedings. I plan on doing the same for DS #2. Ultimately its your choice if you want ur dc there or not. Chat Icon

Re: Baby in the room with you at the hospital?

I delivered at winthrop in 2008 and had the option of keeping DD with me overnight then so I'm confused that its a new policyChat Icon I kept her with me one night, but I was so nervous that I didn't sleep at all - lol - so when the nurse came to check on me I sent her back to the nursery.

They did bring her to me during the night for feedings which was perfect!

I had a private room and maybe I asked if she could stay with me - so it wasn't like they offered -

I did this with my second and it was great. I needed the rest.

#1 stayed with us, but I had DH with me.

Apparently they aren't supposed to tell you to keep the baby but they are supposed to encourage it. When the new building opens supposedly the nurseries are smaller and they aren't going to be able to keep a lot of babies in there. Weird to me.. but just what my MIL said Chat Icon

I am delivering at SB and she is definitely staying with us the entire time. Like an above poster said they are going to make this the new policy soon instead of babies going to the nursery.

I know the op was really about Winthrop but I just wanted to respond to this- I gave birth 13 months ago at NSUH and I never got the idea that the nurses wanted me to keep ds in the room. The first night we did keep him just because I wanted to. A few nurses told me it really would be fine to leave him in the nursery- that I should try and get some rest. The second night I took a percocet, which I had never taken before, and I totally had to give the baby to the nursery b/c it made me loopy and I thought I was gonna drop him! When I went to "visit" him (he was sleeping anyway) there were TONS of babies in there.

ETA I just read the response about the new maternity ward having less space. I plan to play it by ear again- I was one of those annoying people who had their ds sleep over, lol, so that made having the baby in the room easier.

When we went to the orientation at NSUH they did explain that they are very pro rooming-in, but they didn't make it sound like we wouldn't be able to have them take the baby to the nursery if we felt we needed to.

I had the exact same experience. loved it.

I have to say to this day I STILL talk about how I loved winthrop's policy regardng rooming in. But are you speaking about during the day or at night?

See one hting I liked was that btw 5pm and 8pm
the babies HAD to go back to the nursery bc it was peak visiting hours. During the day she was with me all day but btw 5-8 she went to the nursery and when I had tons of visitors during that period they saw her from the glass and I had no complaints about that bc of germs etc.

Then at night it was my choice...but the rooming in wasnt an option. If I remember correctly toyr choice was if you wanted to do the night feedings or not. I chose to do them so at 3am they would bring her in and I would feed her then she would go back.

Re: Baby in the room with you at the hospital?

I didnt deliver at Winthrop, but personally I feel its really important for the mom to be able to get her rest, and I know with me, when my baby was in the room with me, I never truly slept...its like sleeping with one eye (or ear) open. I had the nurses bring my DS to me for feedings (after the first day - also a c/s I dont feel comfortable caring for DC the first day alone because you are confined to the bed) and then I would bring him back and go to sleep.

Personally my feeling is that once I leave the hospital its 100% my responsibility...while I am there I utilize the nursing staff to aid in my recovery. ANd I have had 2 c/s with fairly "easy" recoveries which I feel was possible because I rested as much as possible in the hospital!
