unusual grandparent names...

I grew up calling my grandparents Grandma/Grandpa either alone or coupled with their first names. DH's family uses some slightly more unusual variations that still trace back to grandma/grandpa. However, MIL wants to be called something very unusual that IMO has nothing to do with grandma, and which I associate with something very different. Aside from hoping she'll change her mind (which I doubt she will) I'm just trying to accept it...

To help me feel better, anyone else have grandparents-to-be pick a name that you don't like or think is just plain weird? Tell me I'm not alone! Chat Icon

You are not alone, my MIL want's to be called CC which was so strange to me. I really don't get her aversion to anything related to grandma (especially since she's so excited for the baby). It took be a long time to accept it, but it is what it is. I hope that the baby will just eventually call her grandma when he/she gets older.

You are not alone. If you don't like the name the grandparents want, I would say, I thought it would be cute if your child picked the name. That is what I am doing.

my MIL is called an unusal name by my neice. I hate the name but my neice just started calling her it.

She would like our childrent to call her it too. I don't like and told her my children will call you grandma.

My Mother who I don't speak to anymore, used to tell me they would have to call her Ms. last name Chat Icon

My MIL wants to be called something other than grandma. Right now she likes Oma (grandma in german) or glammy, which is short for glamother (Chat Icon ). While I'm not really a fan of either of them, whatever she ends up choosing will be fine with me.

Re: unusual grandparent names...

My in laws are G-ma and Grumps.

When my nephew was younger, he couldn't say Grandpa or Gramps...and it came out Grumps....My FIL has a...well, sometimes less-than-sunny disposition, so it stuck!

MIL didn't want to be "Grandma", she felt it was too "old"...so she went with G-ma

Re: unusual grandparent names...

I told my parents and IL's to pick some names. I hope they don't pick anything silly. My mom will prob stick to Grandma, since this is what my sister's kids call her (and my dad is Poppy). But I think the IL's will have to think of something else.

Nanny is out of the question because that's my grandma's name on my dad's side and EVERY ONE calls her that.

Yes my mother and father! So my ILs are greek and will be yia yia and papou. How great I tell my parents you can be grandma and pop (what I called my grandparents.) They were like no we want to be something younger. My dad has chosen Granddude and my mom is coming up with ridiculous ideas like Kiki, her name does not start with a K. I told her to think some more. By the way, they are not young!

Re: unusual grandparent names...

hmm
my grandmother insisted we call her Norna!! We weren't allowed to call her grandma or anything of the like. And she would yell at us if we did. it was NORNA. It's pretty made up.... close to the Italian version though.... but not quite the same. And we aren't Italian anyway.

As far as my mother and DH's mother go... I'm not sure what they want to be called. But some of DH's nieces and nephews call his mother Nana... so maybe Nana for her. IDK.

Re: unusual grandparent names...

I never called my grandparents, grandma and grandpa. I'm first generation Hungarian and called them by the hungarian terms for each...DH is American but never called them Grandma and Grandpa either. My parents are now the hungarian term for mom and dad for my DD and for my IL's DD randomly started calling my MIL gigi and FIL peepa and it stuck....I'm the opposite of you, I feel weird calling anyone grandma or grandpaChat Icon

Re: unusual grandparent names...

My mom came up with the name G-G for Grandma G. I told her it sounded like a stripper's name: GiGi. Needless to say, she calls herself Grandma.

This is similar to our issue... the name MIL wants sounds like a stripper's name to me and doesn't really sound anything like her name or grandma. Chat Icon If it was my mom I'd say something but I feel like it's not my place to tell MIL to pick something else Chat Icon

My dad insisted on being called "Grandpa." DS could never say grandpa, so he called him "papa." My dad corrected him CONSTANTLY but it stuck (probably because my FIL, who was also Grandpa, loooooves being called Papa). Now he has a Papa Will and a Papa Richard Chat Icon

Moral of the story: let your MIL pick whatever she wants, the kids will probably call her something totally different anyway Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: unusual grandparent names...

When my nephew was born he started calling my mom Bubbie and it stuck so all of the kids call her Bubbie and my dad is Pop Pop. My son is the oldest grandchild on my DH family and when he was younger he couldn't say Grandma and Grandpa and started saying Mema and Peepaw and it stuck so that is what he and my niece call my in laws.

Re: unusual grandparent names...

My grandparents are Grandma & Grandpa to all of their grandkids.

I find it funny that our generation's parents are probably much older than their parents were when they became grandparents (because most of us are older than our parents were when they had kids) - but our parents want to be called something "younger'

My mom is Nanny (that was an issue between her and my stepmother for a while!) and my dad is Pop Pop, and MIL is Gram. So far we have gotten away with semi normal names.

Chat Icon That sounds like something my dad would say. When I was trying to come up with a song for the father/daughter dance at my wedding, he suggested Who Let the Dogs Out Chat Icon Chat Icon
