If you're superstitious about buying/bringing home stuff for baby .... (especially BTDTs too!)

Ok, I could really use some help & guidance with how this will all work out?

I'm Jewish and was brought up to believe that you don't bring anything into the house before the baby (babies!!!) are born. The part of it that makes sense to me is that if g-d forbid something goes wrong, you don't have a house full of baby things to deal with. Otherwise, to me, its one of those silly superstitions that don't really have much to do with reality.

DH & I lived together for years before we got engaged. We saw each other and took pics before the ceremony.

Now that we are expecting Chat Icon Chat Icon , I'm having a lot of trouble with the reality of this superstition!

How did it work out for you in reality?

How did you get the bassinet/diapers/etc stuff home and ready to use when you came home from the hospital?

How long did it take until you had the nursery all setup with a baby at home?

Re: If you're superstitious about buying/bringing home stuff for baby .... (especially BTDTs too!)

With DD my DH and my parents and IL's were NUTSO.....I bought a lot as did they but we brought NOTHING into the house, my mom had a ton of stuff as others and we had tons in our carsChat Icon Once we were like a good month away around 36 weeks/full term, we brought the car seat, bassinet and pack n play in knowing we were going to need those as soon as we brought her home. Once I gave birth, DH called our furniture store to set up delivery for her furniture and had it delivered the day after we got home...all in all, I was sooooo anal we wouldn't be ready but in reality we needed so little those first few days it was ridiculous...

We brought in the clothes at 36 weeks washed them and had my mom wash them too esp the ones we needed the first few days, the pj's tie shirts, gown etc...
diapers were bought and creams too..I'm ULTRA anal so as much as they were fighting to still keep things at them I couldn't handle itChat Icon

We just did this...everything was at my moms...I was induced but once the baby was born, they stopped and dropped things at my house..I called behrs on my way to be induced and made an appt...my mom washed my clothes week or 2 before (i was on bedrest so everything was up in the air).. We even had diapers, etc. delivered to my moms...it worked out...

Ps we made a sort of exception for the car seat and base since that must go in and we didn't want to be in a panic about it

its really up to you. im not particularly superstitious although i did consider this tradition. my dad was really pushing to not bring anything into the house. but once my shower invites went out i started receiving gifts anyway. at this point i figure we might as well just set the nursery up when the furniture arrives in a month or so. i understand the superstition but at this point we already got stuff delivered here from friends so it is what it is and i plan on setting up whatever i can before Chat Icon arrives. i dont think we will finish the nursery by then and we plan to have Chat Icon in our room at first anyway. but really, do whatever YOU feel comfortable with and dont let anyone pressure you to do it their way.

Thanks for the input ladies! This is going to be a rough decision to make.

My family doesn't have Baby Showers either - so I'm not sure that I'll have many gifts delivered to the house.

At first I was thinking that *nothing* should even be purchased before the babies arrive, except that the furniture would be ordered & held at the store until we come home.

That's feeling a bit insane to me at the moment! Chat Icon

Crashing (BTDT)... my dad is Jewish and felt the same way, he didn't want us to set up the room or put any of the baby stuff together before she arrived. We did paint the room, put in new carpet and a closet system, I washed all her baby clothes and set up the glider but that's about it.

The crib and dresser and the bigger baby things like the swing & PnP stayed in the boxes in the garage until I gave birth. My dad, DH and a few other family members helped to put everything together while I was in the hospital and during that first week home. DD slept in our room for the first 5 months anyway so it didn't matter that the room wasn't set up.

Don't stress it, people will help you! Chat Icon

I think I like your plan ... it seems like it makes sense while still trying to follow the tradition/belief/superstition.

I'd be a lot more comfortable leaving stuff for the last minute if my DH was as handy as yours is! Chat Icon

Re: If you're superstitious about buying/bringing home stuff for baby .... (especially BTDTs too!)

My family has the same beliefs as yours do and if your family actually follows through with the offer to have everything washed and set up while you are in the hospital then it will be fine. I however did not have that experience and frankly it was a huge PIA. Nothing was done. I came home to a house full of giant boxes. I had paid BBB to have everything delivered and set up while I was in the hospital. Well somehow that did not happen. Couple that with an emergency c/s, muscle atrophy from bed rest and it was horrible. I had stuff in cars, at my parent's house and at my in laws house.

I really get the supersticion, but you know what I would rather have set everything up the week or two before the due date to make sure everything is done properly than deal with what I had to deal with. I would never recommend doing this. I had no where to put DS when we came home. DH was trying to figure out how to put stuff together.

Also you cannot leave the hospital without a car seat installed in your car. You should have that checked by a professional before you take the baby home. It would help a lot to have a stroller. I had nothing in my house. The first time I went to the store with DS he was a few days old. I really did not want to have to go, but because I listened to my mom and grandma I had nothing I really needed. Yes, I had clothing, but nothing else. I did not even have a nursing bra. I am writing a book, so I will stop. Congratulations!

Re: If you're superstitious about buying/bringing home stuff for baby .... (especially BTDTs too!)

I am in the same boat as you are...my family doesn't believe in showers or bringing gifts into the house before baby is born!

This is especially hard bc its our first baby and we have nothing!

My parents are going to keep any gifts we get in their house and we'll prob order the furniture in advance so its ready when I deliver. It will be frustrating I'm sure, but we'll get through it!

We have the same beliefs.
We bought gift cards every week for $25-50. By time maternity leave came we had all the cash we needed to purchase what we needed. When I was in labor, mom and mil bought my car seat. When I got home my brother bought the bassinett. The furniture came about 6 weeks later.
